It’s tax time, and Intuit is reaffirming its commitment to help more than 1 million low- to moderate-income and active military taxpayers prepare and file their taxes for free. And small business owners can also play a critical role in helping their employees maximize their refunds.

How? Through the IRS Free File program and Free File programs in 21 states, Intuit is donating TurboTax Freedom Edition, for online tax preparation and electronic filing of returns, to individuals who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. It is also available to active duty military with an adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less, or to anyone who has an adjusted gross income of $31,000 or less.

Last year, California taxpayers alone left more than $1 billion unclaimed in EITC funds. At just one tax assistance event in San Diego this year, 14 out of 34 taxpayers reported receiving EITC and collectively they are receiving more than $37,000 in funds.

Filers can access the free service at any time day or night throughout tax season from the IRS’s Free File website or directly at

Be a connector. Promote financial empowerment. Tell your employees about these tax assistance services so they can claim all the deductions and credits they deserve.
