The Intuit Small Business Employment Index showed continued job growth in September with 27,000 new jobs created in the U.S. While small business hiring continued an upward trend at 0.14 percent growth, its rate slowed from August and wages and hours worked remained flat.

“September’s employment numbers are good news – the fact that employment is still up, albeit modestly, and not down, is comforting,” said Susan Woodward, the economist who worked with Intuit to create the Index. “This optimism is also based on the fact that August’s revised employment numbers were better than the original numbers. This continued growth in small business employment should make us less fearful of another decline in economic activity.”

Small businesses in Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Mississippi saw the greatest regional growth, while New York saw the most job growth as an individual state at 0.8 percent. Midwestern states saw the greatest decline in growth.

The Intuit Small Business Employment Index is based on data from the nation’s smallest of small businesses that use Intuit Online Payroll. You can read the full September report here. To lend a helping hand to small business, Intuit is dedicating the next round of its Love a Local Business grant competition to hiring. Between October and December, small businesses have the opportunity to win $100,000 in hiring grants. Learn more at
