As a small business owner, it’s important to be aware of average pay within your industry so you can figure out how much is fair to pay both an employee and yourself. It’s no secret that throughout history, women have been paid less than men, but many employers still overlook the discrepancy.

Sheryl Sandberg addressed the issue in her popular book, Lean In, and The New York Times recently wrote that “there is a salary gap even when women pay themselves.” But what do the numbers really say?
