Intuit Helps Fresh Food Market See the Light
Every day in Birmingham, Ala., residents in search of fresh fruits and vegetables unwittingly drive by Freshfully, an independent market that sells exactly what they’re searching for — high-quality, locally grown produce.
But from the street, Freshfully’s dimly lit storefront creates the false impression that it’s closed for the day. Not even the bright personalities of owners Jen Barnett and Sam Brasseale can illuminate a path for shoppers into their store.
“Not a lot of people know where we are, and when they drive by, they think we’re closed, because it’s really dark in here,” Barnett explains.
The interior lighting is so poor that many customers have trouble reading numbers on the store’s produce scales. “At least two or three people come in every day and say, ‘You know, it’s really dark in here,’” Barnett says.
Fortunately for these enterprising small-business owners, inadequate lighting didn’t prevent Barnett from seeing a valuable opportunity in Intuit’s Small Business Growing Strong campaign.
“We’re typing this by candlelight from Freshfully,” she humorously bemoans in her wish to Intuit. “Why candlelight, you ask? It’s a bit dark in here. How dark? Well, we just sold someone kale and told them it was collards.”
Barnett’s plea was both clear and compelling: Freshfully desperately needs new lighting. This week, Barnett received the call she was hoping for. Intuit is granting her wish to ensure that the food market has the brightest future possible.
