Intuit has awarded small business grants worth over $200,000 on to businesses that were nominated by their fans: customers, friends, family members, employees and owners.  Since January, over 356 fans voted for SailProud Apparel, and in March, their support really paid off.

Over a 1000 business were nominated in March, but SailProud Apparel, in Boston, MA, had the right combination of luck to be selected in the random drawing and fan support to convince our judges, SOBCon founder Liz Strauss and Kiva president Premal Shah, who selected them as the Grand Prize winner of the March Grand Prize grant worth $30,000.

Four other businesses won $5,000 grants in March, including two from cities that also had February winnersColorado Education Project in Denver, Co, follows on the heels of Buchi Cafe Cubano, as a winner of a $5,000 grant.  Even more surprising, is that tiny Deale, MD, with a population just shy of 5,000, has another winner.  Happy Harbor Inn owner Shelly Daniels had shared information about the Love A Local Businss grant competition at a meeting of local businesses. Heather Buhaj, owner of The Java Stop, was listening – and now has $5,000 small business grant of her very own.

Kimberly Eberl, owner of MotionPR, in Chicago, IL, won with the support of over 750 fans, inlcuding DJB, who says, “Kim is really dedicated in and out of work!” And, finally, Angie McElfresh, owner of proved once again that the most important fan your business has is the owner.  She nominated her own business and won a $5,000 grant.

The winners this month show how important it is for communities and entrepreneurs to support each other.  We want to continue to foster that support, through the LoveALocalBusiness grant competition, through our sponsorship of SOBcon 2010, and through our partnership with Kiva.  Join us:
