ShopMieux Gets Some Marketing Muscle from QuickBooks

In 2013, ShopMieux opened its physical and digital doors as a consignment shop that caters to women seeking secondhand clothing worldwide. The Dallas-based small business has done well to date, and when you consider that its owner is only 23 years old, its rapid success is even more inspiring.

“I began selling my used clothes on eBay in 2009, when I was 18 years old,” says founder Kelsey McLain. “I was about to graduate from high school, and I needed a way of paying for college. Selling my own clothes turned into helping sell my friends’ clothes. I would spend most of my afternoons at Goodwill and Salvation Army going through each women’s apparel item. Most days, I would come up with nothing, and others would be a ‘Yves Saint Laurent wool peacoat, circa 1980s, purchased for $16’ kind of afternoon. I listed it on eBay with a starting bid of 99 cents, and it sold for $900 three days later.”

With a sharp mind for a business and a passion for retail and her community, McLain forged ahead with her vision for ShopMieux, which provides new and “pre-loved” women’s clothing and accessories at up to 90 percent off the suggested retail price.

“We are now a team of 11 women with customers all over the world,” McLain boasts. “We also give internship opportunities for experience and school credit. The clothes we do not accept are donated to the Genesis Women’s Shelter.

“We’re on track to be the world’s largest online retailer of women’s secondhand clothing,” she adds.

Bolstering the Brand

Despite McLain’s early success, she readily admits that the challenge of promoting a small business in a major market is both cumbersome and daunting. In hopes of helping ShopMieux strengthen its brand across the Lone Star State and around the globe, McLain entered QuickBooks’ Small Business Local Buzz campaign.

“Marketing buzz would help us tremendously, as we are still in the beginning stages of growing,” McLain writes in her entry. “We have a great local customer base visiting our physical store, but we would love to further expand our customer base internationally.”

This week, McLain learned that her dream of promoting ShopMieux to a larger audience will soon become a reality. QuickBooks is awarding ShopMieux a customized marketing package worth $5,000.

“This is amazing,” McLain says. “Thank you so much! We hope that the QuickBooks prize package will help us to expand to women in need of an affordable shopping solution. We’re so excited to share the story that means so much to us.”
