5 Mobile Apps for Tracking and Billing Your Time
Time is money, as they say. Whether you bill clients by the hour or simply want to get a better handle on how you spend your workdays, smartphone apps offer a fine alternative to toting around an old-fashioned pen-and-paper agenda.
Here’s a look at five mobile apps for tracking and billing your time.
- Paymo (iOS and Android; free to $14.85 per month) — With Paymo’s smartphone app, you can time projects, scroll through previous projects displayed on a calendar, and manage projects or clients. Projects are grouped under clients, so you can track more than one project per client. The mobile app also syncs with the web-based version, where you can create invoices and view color-coded graphs of how you spend your time. The web-based version offers a tiered pricing structure: the free version offers one invoice per month and unlimited clients and projects for a single user; the basic version provides 30 invoices per month and unlimited clients and projects for two users; and a premium version offers unlimited invoices, clients, and projects for up to three users (additional users may be added for $4.95/month each).
- HoursTracker (iOS; free basic version, $3.99 premium version) — HoursTracker lets you clock in and out of jobs and calculates your earnings once you assign a pay rate to a particular job. You can also view your time in weekly, biweekly, or other increments and export data in text or CSV formats. If you forget to start tracking your time, you enter the correct starting time manually. A paid subscription offers automatic rolling backups and data exporting.
- Yanomo Time Tracking (iOS; $3.99, plus $5 to $12 month for the web-based version) — Although Yanomo’s iPhone version costs $3.99, you can try the web-based version (which syncs up with the iPhone app) for free during a 47-day trial. The web version lets you sync with Google Calendar, so you can log time and generate customizable invoices based on your calendar appointments or time tracking. Both the web-based and iPhone versions allow for creating new projects and tracking time based on a live timer or with manual entries.
- Eternity Time Log (iOS; free “lite” version, $9.99 premium version) — This app categorizes time into work, play, and sleep with the goal of helping users achieve better work/life balance by working more efficiently and understanding how they’re using their time. You can also create custom titles to better reflect your life, although the lite version is limited to seven activities and three tags. The app also creates daily, weekly, or monthly reports, and the premium version offers custom reports as well as backup to email or Dropbox and data export to Excel.
- Harvest Time & Expense Tracker (iOS and Android; free, with paid plans available; pictured) — A subscription to the web-based platform, which syncs with the app, costs between $12 and $90 per month, but a free 30-day trial is also available. With the web-based platform, you can enter time and expenses and generate invoices, estimates, and reports. In addition to tracking your time, Harvest also lets you track expenses and categorize them according to the project and category. Using the smartphone app, you can add notes and upload photos of receipts for future reference.
