How to be a trendsetter in the social space

2 min read

Social media offers great opportunities for small businesses looking to make a name for themselves. Prominent platforms like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube allow you to create and manage your own brand, while reaching hundreds, thousands or even millions of fans from right across the globe. On the flip side, keeping up with best practices and algorithm changes can be a full time job in itself, so how do you become a trendsetter in the social space? Here are four tips for entrepreneurs.

1 Know who you are

To start, figure out who you are and what your unique selling point/s are so you can have a strong point of view. Before you even try to launch your social media strategy, think about what it is that makes your brand special, unique, different from all your competitors.

And this doesn’t just have to be about your product or service, but rather your brand personality. Perhaps your CEO is the focus or its more about the style of your content. Even in a crowded market, you can be a trendsetter by having a strong and consistent theme across all your messaging.

2 Discover the rules (then break them)

There are many rules and guidelines when it comes to creating social media content and surviving in the digital landscape. What content to post, when to post it, how many times a day to post – it can be overwhelming at times.

While it is definitely a wise move to follow along with best practices, sometimes to be a trendsetter, you have to break the rules. Try something different, post content that’s out of the box, do what your competitors are not doing and track your results – after all, what do you have to lose?

3 Get to know your audience

Most business owners will dive into their analytics and know the basics of their audience, maybe their age, gender and times they’re most likely online. Go one layer deeper and really get to know your audience. Who are they?

Make sure you keep track of your best performing content – what did they love? What did they share with their friends and family? What keeps them coming back for more? In the same way, it also pays to understand what doesn’t hit the mark, so you can constantly adjust your content strategy.

4 Follow other trendsetters

The best way to foster your creativity is to surround yourself with others who are successfully creating their own online brand. Find people both inside and outside your niche, that you can bond with, share ideas, expertise and out-of-the-box thinking.

You could also consider working with other influencers, brands and trendsetters in order to grow your brand, your business and your audience. And instead of always following the trends, start to think ahead and always ask yourself the question – what’s next?
