What is a virtual assistant?

2 min read

Many entrepreneurs or sole traders are turning to virtual assistants for help. Whether you run an online ecommerce store, a blog or a service-based business, you know there are so many tasks that regularly need attention and there is only so much time in the day. The question is, could a virtual assistant be the answer for your small business?

What is a virtual assistant?

A virtual assistant could be a highly valuable resource for any entrepreneur or sole trader. They usually offer a variety of support services from a remote location at an affordable price. As a professional assistant, most VA’s work from home and have a variety of different clients. Some assistants will also have other jobs or even run their own business and simply work as a VA on the side.

What does a virtual assistant do?

There is no shortage of tasks that a VA can help with but there is no definitive list either. Each virtual assistant is different and may specialise in certain areas. Finding the right person can be difficult but once you do, a hard-working VA could change your life. Here are a few tasks that a VA may be able to help with:

Social media

Managing multiple social media accounts can quickly overwhelm small business owners. Understanding best practices, keeping up with a regular posting schedule and interacting with customers and readers online can be a full time job. If you feel you can get more out of your social media platforms or you just don’t have the time to manage them all, outsourcing to a VA could be a good idea.

Answering emails

Everyone knows how hard it can be to constantly monitor your inbox. If you’re inbox is often overflowing, it may be worthwhile getting a VA to help answer emails on your behalf. A VA can help sort out your inbox, answer urgent emails and schedule in your meetings and tasks.

If part of your business involves putting together presentations and reports, you could benefit greatly from getting a creative VA to help out. They could take on the responsibility of transforming your notes into powerpoint presentations or well-designed reports, freeing up your time to work on more important tasks.

As your business expands, you may find it harder and harder to manage your calendar. A VA could help you schedule and plan your upcoming meetings and events. They could also manage your content calendar and social media calendar.

Part of your business may involve trying to grow your customer base or clients through outreach. A VA could help develop and manage your outreach tasks, which may involve making phone calls, sending emails or participating in online community groups.

Data entry

Almost every business has a portion of work that can be attributed to data entry tasks. Entering information into databases, filling out spreadsheets, keeping track of statistics and numbers – all these time-intensive tasks could be handed to a VA.
