5 ways to stay motivated while working remotely

2 min read

Do you find yourself lacking motivation when working remotely? Being away from all the action can sometimes leave you feeling uninspired. You might not get to participate in office birthday parties or free work lunches, but you can still do amazing work. Whether you’re working from home or travelling across the globe, here are five ways you can stay motivated while working remotely.

1 Be in close contact with your co-workers

To help you switch on in the mornings and stay motivated throughout the day, you need to be in contact with your fellow co-workers and colleagues. You might not be able to turn around and chat to them like you would in an office setting, but you can use technology to keep in touch. Instead of simply emailing, organise a video meeting so you can talk face-to-face. Check in with your team from time to time and make an effort to be present so you don’t feel disconnected.

2 Change up your routine

It can be easy to get lost in the daily grind, when your routine doesn’t change. Try and shake up your location every now and then, whether it’s working from a cafe for a few hours or even hiring a co-working space for a day. A small change in your environment could help spark motivation and productivity. You could also adjust your working hours or move around your daily tasks just to keep things interesting.

3 Find ways to celebrate

You may not have a manager looking over your shoulder or congratulating you on your success, but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate your wins. Big or small, it’s worthwhile taking time to reward your own work. If you or your team has achieved a goal or reached a milestone, take a moment to celebrate. If you can, pop into the office and join the team festivities or drop your team a note. Working remotely can be a thankless job, so you need to find ways to bring the joy back into your every day.

4 Make face-to-face meetings

While you may not be able to see your team or co-workers on a regular basis, you can still meet with other people face to face. Instead of spending all your time alone, why not organise some meetings of your own? You could meet up with other like-minded business owners, entrepreneurs or specialists. Do some networking of your own and get inspired. There’s no reason why working remotely means you have to be isolated.

5 Allow others to hold you accountable

If you’re struggling to stay motivated and keep on track with your tasks, you may need to find an accountability partner. It could someone at work, or even outside of work, but getting someone to ask you pointed questions could seriously get you back on track. If others are aware of your due dates or deadlines, they can remind you and create a sense of urgency. Sometimes you won’t do things for yourself, but you will do them for others.
