QuickBooks Connect Melbourne is days away and we can’t wait to gather together with accountants, bookkeepers and small business owners alike. In anticipation, we’ve been chatting to our amazing speakers to find out more about them, their business and why they can’t wait to share their secrets at this year’s QuickBooks Connect. Today, we’re chatting with one of our breakout speakers, David Boyar from Sequel CFO.
Tell us a little bit about you
I was brought up with accounting. Last year my Dad celebrated 40 years in public practice and I always knew that if I was going to end up in business, then accounting would be the starting point. This pedigree had an impact. I became one of the youngest Fellow Chartered Accountants, was a global ambassador for the World Congress of Accountants and now co-host the accounting industries number one podcast; From the Trenches – Real Life in The Accounting Industry.
I’m also an ambassador for Chartered Accountants Innovation Agenda – CA Catalyst. Now as MD of Sequel CFO most of my time is spent helping accountants and CFOs become their own business owners and have a huge impact on the communities they work in.
Tell us more about your business
Sequel CFO builds businesses with our clients, while acting as their financial mentors. We are a business owner’s or CEO’s right hand person, providing fact based and timely financial information to drive strategic decision making.
I started the business in 2014, and after some great growth, started franchising in 2017, because there are so many talented CFOs starting their own consulting businesses who don’t get the help needed to learn the skills of a business owner.
That’s where our franchise support system comes in. We work with emerging businesses who are about to go through that stage of growth where everything is getting more serious and the challenges keep coming. We help plan and work through those challenges. We collaborate with the client’s accountants to implement the strategy a board or management team has approved. We can also help bookkeepers with clients who need that extra level of financial support.
We have four extremely talented CFOs who work with bookkeepers and accountants to get results and we are supported by our management accountants in the Philippines. With a total of 10 people in our team, we work from up to nine locations so rely on co-working and technology, and a deep understanding of each other to get our work done.
You’ve been to QuickBooks Connect before – what did you enjoy the most?
I went to my first QBC last year and what stood out was the impressive community Quickbooks has and how easy it was to strike a conversation with a stranger.
What are you looking forward to at QuickBooks Connect 2019?
I’m a huge Todd Sampson fan and am keen to hear his keynote.
You’re speaking at QuickBooks Connect this year. Can you give us a sneak preview of your presentation?
Sequel CFO helps CFOs go from technical employees to business owners. If you want to grow your business you have to make a decision to be a business owner, not just a technical worker who leases time to people.
Few people started their businesses to buy a job, but that is how it turned out for many. This talk showcases the tools needed to go from the technical worker to the business owner and how technology, global teams and a growth mindset can help you do it.
There will also be a surprise guest who will share her story of how the tips discussed helped her business innovate, become more profitable, and how she got more time back.
What’s one thing you hope people take away from your presentation?
After my presentation I hope you have the belief to take control of your business and look forward with confidence.
