7 things that are all too real for bookkeepers

2 min read

You’re the cornerstone of your organisation – the glue that holds your company’s finances together. Without you, there is only chaos. When it comes to being disciplined and methodical, you Excel. You are a bookkeeper!

And only you could relate to these little idiosyncrasies of the job’s day-to-day.

1. You spend more time with your spreadsheets than with your friends

You know your way around a spreadsheet better than anyone and, more often than not, your days are spent in the company of your Excel masterpieces. They say it’s the simple things in life, and sometimes the biggest thrill you get comes from a well-organised, not to mention accurate, Excel worksheet.

2. You create beautiful symphonies of hotkey combos in Excel

You spend your time wowing anyone who’ll watch with macros that generate plots at the quick press of a hotkey combo (you know them all off by heart), or blowing their minds by showing them what a pivot chart can do. Forget the gym – the only exercise you need you can find at your keyboard. If only they made sneakers for your fingers.

3. You double-check your totals (and then check them once more)

You know, deep down, that the numbers are correct, but you can’t help but triple-check your totals manually. Because calculators are just so much fun.

4. You know that if people are avoiding you, it’s probably because they haven’t done their timesheet

You know what an unfinished timesheet looks like – it’s someone avoiding eye contact with you at all costs, turning their head when they see you approach in the staff kitchen. The smiley faces on your timesheet reminder emails don’t fool anyone – they know you’re definitely not smiling.

5. But on pay day, you’re their best friend

There’s always a sense of glee in the air on pay day. Delivering those little parcels of cheer to employees makes you feel like Santa Claus. But don’t be late, or those skirting eyes will be locked on yours when they ask “Why haven’t we been paid yet?”

6. You can’t sleep unless your figures are flawless

It’s 11pm and you’ve spent the last two hours crunching numbers, but you’re $0.03 out. So naturally you start again. Who doesn’t love to go back over unorganised receipts and invoices – that could have been filled out by a primary school student – 10 times. I mean, come on. Is it really that hard to check whether the price includes GST before you submit a purchase order?

7. For you, accuracy is not just a skill – it’s a way of life

Precision is required for your job, but your meticulousness overflows into all aspects of your life. You always know exactly how many units of yogurt are in your fridge, and can correctly predict the exact moment your milk will run out, based on the average hourly consumption of your household.

Even with such unique personality quirks, you’re a vital part of your organisation and your business wouldn’t function properly without you.

Why not check out what QuickBooks Online can do to help simplify your day-to-day.
