Finding a new apprentice isn’t necessarily an easy task. Don’t fall into the trap of hiring one of the first candidates you come across. Take your time and search for someone who is willing to listen, learn, and grow in your business. Here are three tips that will help you find a keeper.
Know what you’re after
The first step to finding a good apprentice is knowing what exactly you’re looking for. Why do you want an apprentice? Where does your business need support? What should that person be like and do on the job? Knowing what you and your business really need will make identifying the right person for the job a lot easier. Here are some questions that can help narrow your search:
- What will the apprentice be doing?
- Will they need any particular skills or experiences?
- What hours will they need to be working?
- Will they need access to a vehicle?
Consider their background
As you start looking through resumes and holding interviews, there are a few practical markers to bear in mind.
- Licence or learner: You might need an apprentice who can to travel to different job sites independently. In this case, it would be useful to have someone onboard who either already has a driver’s licence or is currently in the process of getting one. This way, you don’t have to worry about organising rides for them.
- Work experience: Some previous experience, like internships, is always desirable. It means they have already dipped their toes into the industry and have a general grasp of what the job is about. Past experience will also give you a better sense of how they will fit into your business. - Communication skills: Great communication skills aren’t only important when interacting with fellow team members, but also when conversing with clients. If your interviewee acts in a polite and respectful manner towards you, it’s likely they will behave this way towards others as well.
- Attentiveness: Of course, it’s usually not a good sign if an apprentice is unable to listen and learn from your instructions. That’s why you should look out for someone who pays attention to what you’re saying and can retain this information.
- Organisational skills: A good apprentice should be reliable and able to self-manage. When interviewing for apprentices, a good indication of great organisational skills can be their punctuality and how well prepared they are.
