Zac White on how he made content creation a full time gig.
So you may be asking yourself, how the heck do I get to do this full time? Travel? Take photos and make it profitable and sustainable?
The answer is quite simple really. A combination of passion, hard work, consistency and having the right tools have been key for me. The right camera and editing gear are the obvious tools, but having the right accounting software and being able to lean on my accounting advisor has given me more time to focus on developing my craft and getting clients, as well as giving me the confidence to know that I’ve got the right strategic advice.
I’ve been a content creator and photographer for about 5 years now and it has been an incredible journey that has taught me so much! When I first started out I honestly had no idea what I was doing. All I knew was that I wanted to be a content creator full time and I was going to do anything to get there. After shooting almost every day with my mates and learning more and more about the craft it all came naturally. I was lucky to get some pretty amazing opportunities that took me to places I could have only ever dreamt of.
This all happened so fast! I found myself doing this basically full time and it was somehow working. I was quite sure on the path I was taking with content creating but wowww, learning about how to run a business and make it sustainable was a whole other kettle of fish that’s for sure! More and more clients I was able to get on board the more invoices I had to try and make up somehow, then track my expenses for tax time and literally just figure out how to make this thing run smoothly!
This opened my eyes a lot! I realised that I could not do it all and that I really needed some help! I mean why put time and effort into things like accounting and bookkeeping when it isn’t your profession? I believe it is good to learn but it takes time away from what you’re good at and what actually makes you successful. I decided to look into getting an accountant to help me with how I should be keeping track of everything to do with money within the business, so I enlisted the help of Parlad Bhabra from Kirby Hawke Chartered Accountants.
I remember I only just had met him and the first thing he told me to do was to get QuickBooks. This was honestly the moment where life became so much easier! It was literally a game changer for me, basically the hard part of doing accounting was taken out. The platform allowed me to easily keep track of all my expenses, track my km’s for my logbook, send out custom invoices and even be able to take photos of my receipts and keep them on record within the platform. But the big thing was it made tax time absolutely stress free! It was as simple as sending off my profit and loss statement and I was done.
With all the tools and ecosystems involved with QuickBooks, it’s actually allowed my accountant and I to focus on what really matters and that is finding clarity with the goals I was setting to grow the business to be as successful and sustainable as possible. To me this is all something worth paying for, I get so much value out of using QuickBooks and having an accountant and quite frankly I feel like it has made me a happy person by having one less thing I need to worry about.
