How to Start an Editorial Services Business

2 min read

Commas in the wrong spots can undermine a business’ marketing strategy and make its content look a little foolish. That’s where you come in. If you love grammar, it might be time to help these companies by starting your own editorial services business, and the process is probably easier than you think.

Establishing Your Experience

To make yourself marketable, you need to establish some experience, but luckily, there’s lots of ways to do that. You can take editorial classes, complete an editorial certificate, or earn a degree in a related field such as English or journalism. Alternatively, consider skipping school and getting experience under your belt another way. If you have a friend or relative who has a website, offer to edit content for free in exchange for an endorsement.

Marketing Your Services

Once you have some experience, how are people going to find out about your services? Sometimes, a simple word of mouth approach can work. You edit a website for some friends. They recommend you to another friend who recommends you to a client who recommends you to another individual and so on. But most people need to go a step further, and these days, that means creating a web presence. You can create a website full of your services, prices, and samples of your work, but you may also want some social media pages such as a Facebook business page or a LinkedIn profile. You may also want to put a few ads on Fivver, UpWork, or similar freelancing sites.

Choosing a Niche

With an editorial services business, you can throw your net wide and do all kinds of editing, but you may want to choose a focus. In terms of writing style, there are differences between novels, corporate white papers, blogs, and poetry chapbooks, and when you turn your sights toward one of these niches, you can truly become an expert in your field. Even within each realm, there’s room for greater specification. For instance, if you decide to edit novels, you may want to offer developmental editing, which looks at the overall writing and structure of the book, or you may want to take a more detailed approach with line editing that deals with the nitty gritty details of each sentence.

Networking and Professional Development

As you build your business, it helps to meet other people in your field. To do that, you may want to join a professional group. Editors Canada has groups around the country. You may also want to attend conferences or seminars, but if travelling isn’t possible, consider looking for some online support groups. Remember, these events and groups don’t just have to be tied to editing. You may also want to attend events or join groups that are tangentially related to editing. To explain, say you’re focused on editing blogs and web content. To get a foothold in the industry, you may want to attend an internet marketing conference where you can meet content writers, marketers, and other professionals who may occasionally need to hire an editor.

An editing services business requires very little upfront capital. In fact, you can get started with just a laptop and an internet connection. If desired, you can quit your day job and dive in, or you can start slowly with a single client and build up from there. At the end of the day, your goal is straightforward. You just need to find people to pay you to play with grammar. With the massive amount of content that businesses have to generate to be competitive, your dream may soon become a reality.
