Steps Toward Becoming a Greener Business

Many businesses are investing in more environmentally friendly workplaces. It is not only the right thing to do, but it also has many benefits, such as reducing utility bills and giving employees a clean place to work. There are many opportunities for your business to go green and help the environment.

Use Energy-Efficient Lighting

Conserving energy is a good place to start if you want to have a greener business. Consider replacing your incandescent light bulbs with CFL or LED light bulbs as these light bulbs consume less energy and last much longer. Remind your employees to turn the lights off in rooms when the rooms are not in use.

Say No to Paper Cups

Instead of using paper cups, start bringing a refillable water bottle or reusable cup to work and encourage your employees to do the same. Better yet, give everyone a coffee cup with the company logo on it as a gift so they don’t have an excuse not to bring one. Forget about the coffee pod machine, as those single-serve pods are nonrecyclable and expensive. Consider using a traditional coffee maker to brew coffee; you can make many more cups of coffee at a fraction of the price of a coffee pod machine.

Start an Office Recycling Program

Another thing you can do is educate your employees on what goes into the trash can and what can be recycled. Then, set up individual bins to collect different types of waste, such as papers, plastic, and metal. If there is someone in your workplace who is particularly enthusiastic about green living, ask him or her to be the coordinator of the recycling program to help ensure people are doing their parts.

Print Only What You Need

The days of printing everything out and storing it in paper folders are long gone. Many cloud storage services let you store your files and access them anywhere. You can also share these documents with other people easily. Instead of printing out the agenda for each team meeting, connect a computer to a projector and display the agenda on screen for everyone to see. If you must print something out, consider printing on both sides of the paper.

Reduce Water Usage

Some people take clean water for granted and don’t think much about it when they turn on the tap. The reality is, as of 2015, more than 600 million people in the world have no access to clean water. That’s pretty shocking. One way you and your employees can help with this water crisis is to use water more efficiently. For example, after turning off the tap in the washroom, double check to make sure it’s not dripping. Also, repair or replace any leaky sink or toilet to save water and cut your water bill. By becoming a greener business, you can help the environment, save money, and make your business more appealing to eco-conscious customers.
