Even though they aren’t physically at the water cooler or sitting at a desk close by, employees who are working remotely bring a lot to the table in any workplace. Remote workers tend to give you more bang for your buck as they tend to take less time off and work longer hours. And when recruiting new workers, you have access to a larger talent pool when you choose those who prefer to work in their pajamas.
Instead of relying on Monday morning hellos in the elevator, engage remote workers with regular team videoconferencing that includes all staff members. Stay connected on a daily basis by chatting with online collaboration tools like Slack or SocialCast, which let you create large groups of workers who can ask questions and discuss current projects.
Sit down and have regular one-on-one meetings to track goals and help make a list of to-dos. Also, be sure you publicly reward a job well done with recognition in the company newsletter or through an inner-office email. Gifts are another way to recognize remote workers for their accomplishments. Send a gift card to a favorite restaurant or offer some office swag like a coffee cup or company tee. If you can afford it, fly remote workers in at least once a year so they can spend quality time with on-site staff members and maybe take part in an after-work happy hour.
