Small Business Tip: Don’t Overlook Ambiance When Opening a Restaurant

Have you ever wondered why you stay in your favourite restaurant relaxing with friends and family long after the meal’s over? In the restaurant world, a powerful thing called ambiance has been known to inspire customers to spend more, stay longer and come back often. Here’s how you can create ambiance in your restaurant to make it one of your area’s most successful establishments.

The right restaurant ambiance starts with decor. To figure out how to decorate your restaurant, research your target market. Maybe your target customers are hard-partying college students who drop in for a quick bite after a night on the town. Or they might be couples looking to experience the romance of Paris for a few dollars on a Friday night. For the college kids, you might create an appealing ambiance with bold colours, bright lights, big booths and bench-style seating. Candles on the table, warm colours, dim lights, painted Parisian scenes and intimate tables for two would most likely create the perfect ambiance for couples.

Linens and tableware also create ambiance. Disposable paper and plastic work just as well as washable ceramic and sterling silver, depending on your theme and customers. Even something as unassuming as your menu can inspire customers to buy more and stick around. For example, a chalk board might be just the ticket to present the menu at a rustic Italian restaurant. Likewise, a menu design showing off cool graphics printed on recycled paper has the power to boost ambiance in a trendy sandwich shop. Also, try not to forget cleanliness. Everyone feels more comfortable when the premises are well maintained.

The cool thing about ambiance is that it doesn’t cost a fortune to create. It only takes being in tune with your customers to give your restaurant an awesome vibe.
