  • Make sure the service can handle your needs, especially in terms of deducting taxable benefits, calculating matching retirement contributions, or handling other benefit programs
  • Look at cost, which may be a set monthly fee or based on the number of employees
  • Compare employee payment options such as cheques or direct deposit
  • Consider compatability with your accounting software — ideally, you want to be able to sync payroll information with your accounting software easily
  • Ask about reporting capabilities so you can see where you how you are spending your money
