Why Project Management Should Be in the Cloud (and 4 Apps That Make It Possible)

Cloud-based project management apps let you manage your projects anytime and anywhere. They offer a convenient way for your team to access resources and communications with regards to current projects.

Trello is a project management tool that gives you a visual overview of your projects. You can create boards in Trello, which are similar to the whiteboard you may have in your office. For each board, you can create lists and cards for lists. Trello lets you create teams in the app and assign your boards to these teams. All team members can access the Trello boards to ask questions about a task or provide comments. You keep all the communication about a task in one place, so everyone is on the same page. You can create a board for a project in Trello. On the project board, you can designate one list for pending tasks and another list for tasks in progress. You can then create a card for each task and assign it to a team member. You can drag these cards from one list to another, making it easy to keep track of their statuses. Trello is available as a web app and a mobile app for iOS and Android.

Basecamp lets you keep everything about your business in one place so the info doesn’t get lost along the way. It is available on most platforms, including Mac OS, Windows, iOS, and Android. In Basecamp, you can create company-wide announcements, discussion boards, projects, schedules, to-do lists, and even a document repository. Its built-in group chat and instant messaging features let team members carry on conversations within the app. Basecamp also has an automatic check-ins feature that reminds team members to record information about the tasks they’re working on in the system. This ensures the information in Basecamp is kept up-to-date.

Zoho Projects

When working on a project, chances are many of the tasks are interdependent. For example, before you can proofread a document, you have to write it first. Zoho Projects lets you plan the interdependent tasks in your projects easily so you don’t get stuck at bottlenecks. If you’re a more visual person, you can view the progress of your projects in Gantt charts, customize the charts to include information that is most important to you, and export the information to use in other applications. Zoho Projects’ timesheet feature lets everyone on the team keep track of the time spent on their tasks and export the timesheet data in various formats, including XLS and PDF. This makes billing your clients and getting paid much easier. Zoho Projects is available as a web app and a mobile app for iOS and Android.

If you have a small team with less than 15 members, Asana is a free cloud-based project management tool that allows you to keep track of the progress of your projects. It is available for iOS and Android, as well as on the web. You can create tasks and subtasks with due dates for your projects in Asana, and assign them to different team members. When you do that, these tasks automatically show up on their task lists. Your team members also receive notifications in their email inboxes and on their mobile devices. You can integrate Asana with other apps, including Dropbox, Google Sheets, and Slack, to streamline your project management workflow. Having the right project management tool not only helps you cut operating costs, but it also improves collaboration in your team. With apps like the ones mentioned above, you can stay on top of your projects regardless of your location.
