How to Become an Influencer on Twitter

2 min read

As a small business owner or freelancer, you can increase your audience reach, and gain higher visibility and credibility with potential customers or clients by becoming recognized as an influencer on Twitter. Since many of your prospective customers may research your profiles on social media sites, appearing to be an authority in your chosen field can give you a big advantage in landing new business. In any event, it’s a smart idea to at least establish yourself on social media channels such as Twitter as someone with a respectable following. Follow these simple steps to significantly expand your Twitter influence.

Work on Your Profile

The first step is enhancing your Twitter profile to help attract followers in your target audience of prospective customers and high profile people in your industry. Include your company name in your bio, along with keywords related to your industry. Also, note industry certifications or noteworthy career achievements. If you’re a freelancer, this might include high profile clients you’ve done work for.

Follow Existing Influencers and Engage with Them

You can enhance your own social media standing by connecting with others in your industry that already have successful profiles and established credibility. Simply search out respected individuals or companies that you know of in your field and follow them. To find others besides the ones you know of, you can search relevant hashtags. For example, if you’re a freelance graphic designer, you might search the hashtags #graphicdesign and #websitedesign. Then, identify people who frequently use these hashtags and follow them.

However, if you want to really get noticed and attract attention, it’s not enough to simply follow people and hope they follow you back. Work to engage them by doing things such as favouriting, retweeting, or replying to some of their tweets. You won’t always generate a response, but if you keep at it, most people will eventually give you at least a nod of recognition now and again.

By the same token, you should make the effort to acknowledge people who respond to your tweets. This is very important, since there is a high correlation between the amount of engagement people generate with their tweets and the relationship they have with their followers. Whenever someone responds to one of your tweets, that’s an opportunity to cultivate a relationship and increase the likelihood that they will share your tweets with their own followers, thus expanding your online reach.

Post Helpful Content

Tweeting content that’s relevant to your business and helpful to your clients or customers may seem like a no-brainer, but there may be a bit more to it than you think. Don’t just assume that you know what your followers will find helpful — instead, take the time to do some research. Look through the tweets of other influencers in your field, as well as those of your followers, to see what subjects attract the most attention in the form of retweets, favourites, or comments.

Also, don’t forget to use your Twitter activity to enhance your online presence on other social media sites. Cross-post what you tweet on Twitter on Facebook, LinkedIn, or other online communities you’re involved with.
