How to Find Time for a Vacation as a Small Business Owner

1 min read

You built your business from the ground up, and you feel like you need to be there every day. You may be the force that keeps the company thriving, but overworking yourself and skipping vacations leaves you feel drained. Regardless of how tied you feel to your business, it’s a good idea to give yourself time off to recharge your batteries.

When you’re the boss, you can’t just drop everything to go on vacation. Instead, it’s a good idea to plan ahead for your time off. Consider scheduling your vacation during downtime, so you’re not missed as much. If you run a bicycle shop, for instance, a winter vacation might make sense. Business is slow, and your employees can hold down the fort until you return. If you’re nervous about leaving, start with a short vacation. You can work up to longer breaks as your business stabilizes.

You might also want to prioritize your usual workload before you leave. You can delegate some of your tasks before you head out. Training one of your employees to take care of things in an emergency makes it easier to get away. If you need to handle certain responsibilities, work ahead to complete those tasks before you leave. Less important duties can wait until you get back.

Letting your staff know about your vacation plans helps things run smoothly while you’re gone. Make sure everyone knows the game plan and the dates you’re gone but assure them you’ll be reachable by phone or email in case something happens while you’re gone. If you use a cloud-based management system, you can peek in on things while you’re away.

Unwinding with a vacation, even a short one, helps you clear your head and stay healthy. Trust in your employees and put efficient systems in place to make your vacation time possible.
