Cannot deactivate Bank Feeds for an account

Perform these recommended troubleshooting steps if, after editing an account to deactivate online services, the Bank Feed Settings tab remains available and the lightning bolt continues to appear in your Chart of Accounts. For best results, follow the solutions in order shown.

Note: Mac steps provided in this article are intended for US only.

Solution 1: Re-sort the Chart of Accounts and check for data damage

  1. From the Lists menu, click Chart of Accounts.
  2. Ensure All Accounts (or Include Inactive) box is checked.
  3. Click the Account drop-down (For Mac, go to the Edit menu) and select Re-sort List.
  4. Click OK on the "Are you sure you want to return this list to its original order?" prompt.

After re-sorting the Chart of Accounts, check for and resolve data damage issues.

Solution 2: Merge the account into a new bank account

Reminders before merging accounts

  • Back up the QuickBooks company file before merging accounts.
  • You can merge a bank account only if there are no pending, unmatched transactions in the Bank Feeds Center for that account. You must clear, or match, pending transactions before proceeding.
  • This process incorporates all existing transactions in the old account into the new account.
  • Transactions in the old account will be un-reconciled in the new account. After merging, you will need to re-reconcile cleared transactions.

  1. Edit the problem account.
    1. In the Chart of Accounts, right-click the problem account then choose Edit Account.
    2. Highlight and copy the account name.
    3. At the end of the account name, put an asterisk (*).
    4. Under the Bank Feeds Settings tab, choose Deactivate All Online Services. (For Mac, select Online Settings then Not Enabled from the Download transactions drop-down.)
    5. Click Save & Close.
  2. Create a temporary account.
    1. Create a new account in the Chart of Accounts.
    2. Paste the copied account name (without the asterisk).
    3. Click Save & Close.
    4. Choose No when the "Set Up Bank Feeds" prompt appears.
  3. Merge the accounts.
    1. Back in the Chart of Accounts, right click the account with asterisk then choose Edit Account.
    2. Remove the asterisk from the account name and click Save & Close.
  4. Verify that the lightning bolt is gone, then re-set up Bank Feeds.

Solution 3: Deactivate online services using Excel

  1. Export your Chart of Accounts.
    1. To do this, go to File > Utilities > Export > Lists to IIF Files then select Chart of Accounts to export. (For Mac, go to File > Export > Lists to IIF Files).
    2. Save the file in a folder you prefer.
  2. Edit the IIF file in Excel.
    1. Right-click the file and select Open with Excel. (Or, open Excel and drag the file on to the spreadsheet).
    2. To look for the damaged account(s), scroll at the bottom of the page and find the !QBONLINE section where bank accounts are listed.
    3. Disable online services by changing Y to N for all online banking columns: OLBANKING, OLBILLPAY, OLENABLED, OLTAB.
    4. Save the file and select Yes on the question that follows.
    5. Close Microsoft Excel.
  3. Re-import your Chart of Accounts.
    1. Back in QuickBooks, go to File > Utilities > Import and then select the IIF file to re-import.
  4. Verify that the lightning bolt is gone, then re-set up Bank Feeds.
