Quickbooks Payroll Updates

Hello - I work for a small I.T. Company that has numerous clients that use Quickbooks, and quite a few of them do payroll.  The "problem" is, many of the systems are, "locked-down" from Internet access.  When Payroll updates need to be done, we need to remote-in to the systems to open their Internet access, then run the updates, then we lock the systems back down.  What I'd like to know is - is anyone aware of any URL's we can whitelist?  What we do to lock the Internet is set-up a dummy Proxy, however, we can put sites in the Exceptions for Internet Explorer.  I am looking at the possibility of using Wireshark to see if we can determine what we are looking for from it, however, I wanted to check to see if anyone might already have that information?  Thank you!

Re: Quickbooks Payroll Updates

Hi there, @BDS1959.

It's nice to have you here in the Community. I can share some information about this internet access concern.

If your computer can connect to the internet outside of QuickBooks Desktop, but you have difficulties updating your payroll or performing tasks, you may need to configure Internet Explorer in your computer. Before performing the troubleshooting steps, make sure you update to the latest version of Internet Explorer, IE 11 if you are using Internet Explorer 10 or versions older.

For the complete steps of the process, please refer to this article: Verify and Troubleshoot QuickBooks Desktop and Internet Explorer settings.

Also, you can check out this article about configuring firewall and internet security settings in QuickBooks Desktop for your future reference: Configure Firewall and Internet security settings for QuickBooks Desktop.

These amount of information should fix your internet access issues, @BDS1959

Please let me know if you have any other questions about this concern as I am always here to help. Have a great day!

Re: Quickbooks Payroll Updates

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately I'm thinking maybe I didn't describe my issue/question as well as I could/should have?   The users have I.E. 11 on their PC's.  They are locked-out of Internet access by setting the Proxy to Port-1.  However, in I.E., an Exception List can be added that bypasses the Proxy.  To do the payroll updates, all we need to do is turn the Proxy off.  After the updates are done, we turn the Proxy back on.  What we are looking for is the URL(s) that we can add to the Proxy Exception List so that the Payroll updates can be done without the necessity of turning the Proxy off.  For example, some of out users have Dropbox.  There is a setting in the Dropbox configuration that allows it to not use any [system] proxy settings.  In other words, though they still have no Internet [BROWSING] access, they can still use Dropbox.  In other words, it would be nice if Quickbooks would have a setting to ignore any proxy, but, if it does, we haven't found it.  Hopefully this makes more sense?  My apologies for any confusion!

Re: Quickbooks Payroll Updates

Thank you for your response.  Unfortunately, I don't think I did as good of a job explaining my situation/question as I could and should have done.  Our users have I.E. 11 on their systems.  They are locked-out of Internet BROWSING by using a Proxy setting of Port-1.  To do their Payroll updates, all we do is turn the Proxy off, then download the updates, then turn the Proxy back on.  However, I.E. does allow an Exception List - a list of one or more sites that will bypass the Proxy.  What we are looking for, and what I am thinking about using Wireshark for, is the site(s) that would need to be added to the Exception List so our users can update their Quickbooks Payroll without our assistance.  Some of our clients have and use Dropbox.  Dropbox has a program setting that allows the Proxy to be bypassed.  In other words, they are still locked-out if Internet browsing, but they can use Dropbox.  It  would be nice if Quickbooks had a program setting that would allow a Proxy bypass.  If it does, however, we haven't found it.  Hopefully this update helps.  My apologies for any confusion!

Re: Quickbooks Payroll Updates

There's nothing to apologize, BDS1959.

The Community is always here to help with any QuickBooks related concern. Thanks for getting back to us and providing additional details about the issue. You did well in explaining things out and I'd love to share some insights about it.

The default browser used by the program is Internet Explorer. There isn't a built-in setting which can bypass the Proxy in QuickBooks Desktop.

If there are issues with updating payroll or in any other add-on features, I generally recommend configuring the Internet Explorer or its security settings. The steps in doing this are already given by my friend @BettyJaneB above.

However, there are a lot of applications or software you can integrate with the program. Based on how you've described Whiteshark and Dropbox, I can see the help they can give to you and all the users to run the payroll updates. We recognize the uniqueness of every businesses, therefore, we don't provide recommendations one which one to use.

I'd recommend contacting both Whiteshark and Dropbox specialists to determine which of them best suits your business needs. They are also the experts in ensuring a set up to allow Proxy bypass in the program.

The detailed information you've shared gives me an idea of how beneficial it can be to have such option in QuickBooks. I'll prepare a feedback statement to send up to our product engineers. You can also add up your voice by going to the Help menu, then selecting Send Feedback Online

Be sure to touch base with me here on the results. I want to make sure this matter gets resolved and ensure your success.

Have a great day!

Re: Quickbooks Payroll Updates

What I'm looking for are the sites/URLs that the Quickbooks Payroll Update uses so I can put them in the Proxy Exception list.  Thanks!

Re: Quickbooks Payroll Updates

Hey there, BDS1959.

Allow me to provide a piece of additional information about the proxy exception list for QuickBooks Payroll Updates.

In addition to what my peers BettyJaneB and VivienJ stated above, you'll need to add firewall port exception for QuickBooks.

Here's how:

  1. From Windows search bar, enter then open Windows Firewall.
  2. Select Advanced Settings.
  3. Right-click Inbound Rules and select New Rule.
  4. Select Port, then select Next.
  5. Make sure TCP is selected. Enter the specific ports needed for your QuickBooks year version, then select Next.

    QuickBooks Desktop 2019: 8019, XXXXX
(XXXXX is the assigned port number found in QuickBooks Database Server Manager)
    QuickBooks Desktop 2018: 8019, 56728, 55378-55382
    QuickBooks Desktop 2017: 8019, 56727, 55373-55377
    QuickBooks Desktop 2016: 8019, 56726, 55368-55372

  6. Select Allow the Connection, then Next.
  7. If prompted, make sure all profiles are marked, then select Next.
  8. Give the rule a name, such as QBPorts(year). Select Finish when done.
  9. Repeat the steps above for the Outbound Rules (for step 3, choose Outbound Rules instead of Inbound). Try opening QuickBooks Desktop again in multi-user mode or over your network to see if the issue has been resolved.

For figures and detailed information, check out this recommended article: Configure Firewall and Internet security settings for QuickBooks Desktop.

Re: Quickbooks Payroll Updates

Thank you to everyone who contributed so far, however, I still apparently am not explaining my question correctly?  The Proxy is on - we cannot connect to QB Payroll updates.  We turn the Proxy off - updates run as expected.  What I'd like to know is the site(s) to add to the Proxy Exception List so that we don't need to turn the Proxy off.  Thank you.

Re: Quickbooks Payroll Updates

Hi there, @BDS1959.

Thank you or explaining further what you're trying to accomplish. Allow me to provide additional information about this concern so you add the Proxy to the Exception list.

You can add the domain to the proxy exception list.

To do that:

  1. Open Control Panel window.
  2. Open Internet Options.
  3. Navigate to Connections tab.
  4. Click on the LAN settings button.
  5. At Proxy server section click Advanced button.
  6. At Exceptions section enter "" (without the quotes). If any entries already exist, you can separate them with a semicolon (Smiley Wink.
  7. Click OK and close all windows and save the settings.

However, if you need additional assistance with this matter, I'd suggest reaching out to our Intuit Developers. This team has extra tools to provide further information and discuss this matter with you. You reach them, please visit this link:
