Security program updates cause the following error when opening QuickBooks Desktop

An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to start the database server that manages access to the QuickBooks company file. Error (-6094,0)

This error usually happens because of anti-virus programs such as PC Tools Internet Security, AVG Anti-Virus, and SpyHunter Malware blocking QuickBooks.

 

Note: The information about third party security programs in this article is limited. Consult your anti-virus provider for detailed and updated steps if necessary.

Perform these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Ensure your anti-virus software is on the latest update.
  2. Restore qbdmgr.exe and qbdmgrN.exe from the virus vault or quarantine.
  3. Prevent QuickBooks Desktop Directory from being scanned by adding exceptions on your anti-virus software.

    PC Tools Internet Security

    To restore "infections" that have been quarantined:

    1. From the Settings menu, select Quarantine.
    2. Select the necessary items to restore, then choose Restore.
    3. Choose Yes, then OK.

    To set up exception to prevent QuickBooks directory from being scanned:

    1. From PC Tools Internet Security menu, choose Settings.
    2. Select Global Action List, then choose Add to select the files to be excluded from scanning.
    3. Choose OK.

    AVG Anti-Virus

    To prevent QuickBooks directory for being scanned:

    1. Close QuickBooks Desktop and open AVG Anti-Virus User Interface.
    2. Double-click Resident Shield and choose Manage Exceptions.
    3. Select Add Path, then add the path C:\Program Files\Intuit.
      NOTE: If QuickBooks is installed in a different folder, add that folder path.
    4. Choose OK and Save Changes.
      NOTE: It may be necessary to restore all QuickBooks file that AVG Anti-Virus quarantined.

    To check if any of the QuickBooks files are quarantined:

    1. Open AVG Anti-Virus User Interface, then select History.
    2. Choose Virus Vault and locate any QuickBooks files that has been quarantined.
      Example: qb.exe, qbw32.exe, qbdbmgr.exe, qbdbmgrn.exe
    3. Select the necessary files, then choose Restore and Close.
    4. Open QuickBooks Desktop.

    To check for renamed files in the installation Directory

    1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
    2. Check C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks folder for any files in the install directory that were renamed.
      Example: QBDBMGRN_AVG_RESTORED
    3. Rename the file back to the original name.
      Example qbdbmgrn.exe
    4. Open QuickBooks Desktop.

    SpyHunter Malware Software

    • Follow the steps in this SpyHunter article to remove QuickBooks from the blocked processes.
  4. Repair QuickBooks Desktop.
