If you see Error -6123,0 while opening or upgrading your company file

Step 1:  Download and run QB Refresher

The QBRefresher tool will close background processes that might be causing the error. It will also do a mini refresh of your program files.

  1. Select the button above to download the QBRefresher installation file.  Save the file somewhere you can easily find it, like your Downloads folder or your Windows desktop.
  2. Finish any tasks you’re currently working on in QuickBooks.
  3. Close all versions of QuickBooks Desktop running on your computer.
  4. Double-click the QBRefresher.exe file to run the program.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions. QBRefresher should run for about 30 seconds.
  6. When QBRefresher is finished, open QuickBooks Desktop again.

If you still see Error -6123,0, move on to Step 2.

Step 2: Run File Doctor

If QBRefresher didn’t work, we can use File Doctor to repair your company file. File Doctor is a tool that automatically scans and fixes common QuickBooks Desktop data issues.

  1. Use the link above to download the QuickBooks File Doctor installation file. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it, like your Downloads folder or your Windows desktop.
    • If you have an older version of File Doctor on your computer, uninstall it. Download and use the version linked above.
  2. Open the File Doctor.exe file.
  3. When the install is finished, File Doctor will open automatically.
    • If QuickBooks asks you to run the internal version of File Doctor, close the prompt. Use the downloaded version of File Doctor.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions. Choose your company file from the drop-down.
    • If you don’t see it, select Browse to search your computer for the file. The file will look like this: [your company name].qbw.
  5. Select Check File Damage Only, then Diagnose File.
  6. Enter your QuickBooks admin password, then select Next.
  7. Select Repair file in existing version of QuickBooks, then select Next. If you see the option to “Open the file in a newer version of QuickBooks,” don’t select it. Try fixing the current version of your company file first. If this doesn’t work, close and reopen File Doctor. This time, choose “Open the file in a newer version of QuickBooks."
  8. File Doctor will start repairing your file. This may take a while.
  9. When the repair is finished, select your company from the list and then select Open QuickBooks.
  10. Even if File Doctor says the fix was unsuccessful, try restarting your computer and opening QuickBooks anyway.

If you can open your file without any issues, everything is fixed. Be sure to make a back-up of your company file once you’re able to open it.

If you repaired your file with File Doctor but still see Error 6123,0, don’t worry. Your data should be safe. At this point, please get in touch our data services team for additional fixes.

If you see Error -6123,0 while restoring your company file
