Common HMRC RTI Error Messages for Payroll

Please follow below guidance on the most common error messages you may receive when you submit your payroll to HMRC.

Error Code 1046: Authentication Failure Error

When you submit an FPS, HMRC will check your goverment gateway credentials as well as your Accounts Office Ref & PAYE reference. You might see this error appear if those details do not match what HMRC has on file for you.

There’s a couple of steps you can follow to resolve this error:

  • Ensure you are registered with HMRC.
  • Log onto HMRC and enter in your username and password.
    • Please ensure the digits are less than 12.
    • Ensure Caps Lock is off as passwords are case sensitive.
  • If you have recently signed up with HMRC, your account may take some time before it's fully activated.
  • If you have recently migrated from one payroll software provider to another, please ensure you are manually typing the credentials.

Error Code 7806: This submission cannot be accepted as it does not fall within the eligible filing period

The submission cannot be accepted as it does not fall within the eligible filing period. The filing period is defined as any period or tax year within the date you have been invited to submit RTI filings.

Error Code 7801: Accounts Office Reference or PAYE Reference is incorrect

Please ensure you check both reference numbers against a letter or email you have received from HMRC.

Error Code 7802: You have not been invited to submit this submission type

You need to contact Employer Services, as you will need assistance.

Error Code 7804: This submission cannot be accepted as a Full Payment Submission or Earlier Year Update has not been received and successfully validated for this scheme reference

This should not appear when using PaySuite as it would happen when they haven't submitted their final FPS or EYU for the previous tax year.

Error Code 7809: This submission cannot be accepted as the date if submission is after April 19th following the tax year to which it relates to

You cannot send an FPS for a previous tax year after April 19th. If you need to amend an employee's data for a previous year that you submitted an FPS for, you will need to send HMRC an EYU (Earlier Year Update).

Error Code 7815: This submission cannot be accepted as this employers scheme has been cancelled

You will need to contact HMRC as you will need assistance.

Error Code 7866: The amount in [EMPLOYEESCONTRIBUTIONSON ALLEARNINGSYEARTODATE] must be 0.00 if the [NILETTER] is ‘X’, ‘C’, or ‘W’

This error message occurs when a value greater or less than zero is present against a category that should be zero, when the NI Letter is X, C or W.
