Error -6177, 0: QuickBooks is attempting to open this Company file

QuickBooks Desktop is unable to use the path to open the company file if, when you open it, you see this error:

QuickBooks is attempting to open this Company file. Before you can open the company file from your computer you must first open the company file on the computer where the company file is located. (-6177, 0)

Before performing the following steps, make sure your QuickBooks Desktop is up to date.

Solution 1: Move the file to the local hard drive

  1. Move the file from the server to the local C drive.
  2. Open the file in QuickBooks from the C drive.
  3. Create a portable file and save it to the C drive.
  4. Close the company file.
  5. Restore the portable file from the C drive and save it to the server.
  6. Close the company file.
  7. Open the company file from the server.

Solution 2: Use the QuickBooks File Doctor

Download, install and run the QuickBooks File Doctor. QuickBooks File Doctor can be downloaded from: QuickBooks File Doctor: Fix your company file or network (US, CA, and UK).

Solution 3: Manually resolve -6177, 0 without using the QuickBooks File Doctor

Use the following steps if the QuickBooks File Doctor can't run successfully on your computer or you prefer a manual solution.

  1. Go to the computer that stores your company file(s) and close QuickBooks Desktop. Delete the Network Descriptor (*.ND) file (QuickBooks Desktop creates this file automatically):
    1. Open the folder where the company file is stored and find the file with an .ND file extension; it looks something like MyCompanyFileName.QBW.ND.
    2. Right-click the .ND file and choose Delete.
  2. Configure the QuickBooks Database Manager:
    1. Click the Windows Start button and choose Programs > QuickBooks > QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
      Note: In Windows 8, on your keyboard, press Windows and enter QuickBooks Database Manager, and then click QuickBooks Database Manager.
    2. Click the Add Folder button.
    3. Find the folder with the QuickBooks Desktop company file (or files) and click OK.
    4. (Optional) Repeat steps 3b and 3c to add additional folders.
    5. Click the Scan button. The QuickBooks company files found list shows all the company files QuickBooks Database Server Manager is hosting.
    6. After the scan is complete, click Close.
  3. Check the company file access permissions in Windows.
    1. Go to Set up folder permissions to share company files web page to verify permissions are set up correctly.
    2. If you need to set permissions for QuickBooks, refer to: Set Windows access permissions to share company files.
  4. (Optional) If the full application is installed on the server:
  5. Open the file on the computer where the error message was displayed.
