Error: The validation code and product number is incorrect or the service is temporarily unavailable when activating

You may get the following message after entering your validation code or license and product number when activating or installing your QuickBooks Desktop:

The validation code is incorrect. Please verify the number and enter it again.

This service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

You have entered incorrect license/product numbers. Please check the numbers carefully.

Important
  • Make sure to check the following before performing any of the recommended solutions:
  • See if QuickBooks is already activated Verify that the License number and product code match the one on the sticker on the QuickBooks product package.
    • For a downloaded product: Look in the purchase confirmation email you received from Intuit.
    • If you purchased QuickBooks on CD: Look for the a brightly coloured sticker on the original CD envelope.
    • ProAdvisors: You can go to the member support site for installation codes.

To fix the issue, perform these solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Verify that the system date and time settings are correct

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Right-click the time display in the Windows task bar, then select Adjust Date/Time.
  3. Select the Date & Time tab, then set the date for the current year.
  4. Select Apply, then select OK.
  5. Open QuickBooks Desktop and choose Help > Activate QuickBooks > Begin Activation. (For Canadian version of QuickBooks, Help > Register QuickBooks > Begin Registration for Canadian version of QuickBooks).
  6. Enter the Validation code, then select Next.

Solution 2: Reset the .ecml file

<>Solution 3: Reactivate MSXML

  • 64-bit operating system, activate MSXML with the following commands:
    1. From the Start menu, type cmd, then right-click and choose Run as Administrator.
      Note: In Windows 8, on your keyboard, press Windows key and type cmd, then right-click and choose Run as Administrator.
    2. At the C: prompt, enter cd\windows\syswow64.
    3. Enter regsvr32 MSXML4.dll, then press Enter.
    4. Enter ype regsvr32 MSXML6.dll, then press Enter.
  • 32-bit operating systems: register MSXML with the following commands:
    1. To open the Run window, press Windows key + R on your keyboard.
    2. Enter cmd, then press Enter.
    3. Enter regsvr32 MSXML4.dll, then press Enter.
    4. Enter regsvr32 MSXML6.dll, then press Enter.

Solution 5: Create a new Windows Admin

Windows 10

  1. Select Start, then select Settings.
  2. Select Accounts, then select Family & other users.
  3. Under Other Users, select Add someone else to this PC.
  4. At the bottom of the page, select I don't have this person's sign-in information.
  5. At the bottom of the next page, select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
  6. Enter the name of the new account.
    Note: It is recommended that you assign a password to the new account to ensure security.
  7. Select Finish. By default, the new account is set as a Standard User.
  8. Select the newly created account, then select Account Type.
  9. Select the dropdown menu, select Administrator, then select OK.
  10. After creating the new user, sign out of Windows and sign back in as the new user.
  11. Open QuickBooks Desktop and try to register by choosing Help > Activate QuickBooks > Begin Activation. (For Canadian version of QuickBooks, Help > Register QuickBooks > Begin Registration).

If this resolves your error, decide whether to keep the new administrative user, or remove it and continue using the existing one.

Windows 8

  1. To open the Computer window, press Windows + E on your keyboard.
  2. Select Computer at the top, then select Open Control Panel.
  3. Select User Accounts, then Manage another account.
  4. When the Manage Accounts window opens, select Add a new user in PC settings.
  5. Enter the new user name and domain name, then select Next.
  6. Select Administrator access for this new user, then select Finish.
  7. After creating the new user, sign out of Windows and sign back in as the new user.
  8. Open QuickBooks Desktop and try to register by choosing Help > Activate QuickBooks > Begin Activation. (For Canadian version of QuickBooks, Help > Register QuickBooks > Begin Registration).

If this resolves your error, decide whether to keep the new administrative user, or remove it and continue using the existing one.
