Card reader errors

Every other credit card transaction I try to process cancels itself out. We insert the card, the card reader thinks for 5 seconds or so then "Transaction cancelled" or "System error" pops up on the pin pad, "Customer cancelled the transaction" comes up on QB POS side.  We start over, and two thirds of the time it will work on the second attempt, a third of the time it takes 2 or 3 more tries. We are using QB Desktop POS 18 on Windows 10 and a brand new ingenico iPP350 card reader that has version 23.0.12.0011 firmware.
