State employer's quarterly tax report is reporting wrong

Just filed my Quarterly State Tax Report and although the wages and taxable wages are correct and showing the same, the amount due is way off, by over $1,000. The tax rate is correct but the amount due is simply way off. Intuit reports we owe more than the state is calculating.

Did you perhaps enter the rate incorrectly as a decimal?

Re: State employer's quarterly tax report is reporting wrong

Let me help you sort this out, @ELK5.

May I ask for what state are you referring to? This is for me to provide you with accurate information to fix your state tax calculation.

Also, let's perform the following steps to fix your state tax calculation.

  1. Update to the latest release of QuickBooks Desktop
  2. Download the latest payroll tax table
  3. Verify if your employee's profile has the correct state information.
    1. Go to the Employees menu.
    2. Select Employee Center.
    3. From there, double-click the employee's name.
    4. Select Payroll Info.
    5. Click the Taxes button the go to the State tab.
    6. Make sure the following items are correct: State Worked / State Subject to WithholdingSUI is marked, Extra WithholdingFiling status and Number of allowances
    7. Go to the Other tab.
    8. Delete the Colorado taxes or surcharges on that field then click Yes on the warning.
    9. Click OK.

Then, let's verify the SUI rate of your state is correct in your Payroll Item List

  1. Go to the List menu.
  2. Choose the Payroll Item List.
  3. Locate and double-click the states SUI.
  4. Click Next to view the rate.
  5. Click Next multiple times.
  6. Hit Finish.

If the issue persists,  I’d recommend contacting our Payroll Support Team. An agent will be able to look into your account and  further assist you via a secured remote access session.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to Help.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click on the Contact us link.
  4. Choose Search for something else.
  5. Type in a keyword about your concern.
  6. Hit Submit.
  7. Click on the Start a Message button.
