Question

I tried several times to import a csv-file to import older transactions but got the message "File upload failed. (Probably our fault)" - what can I do?

Can we try uploading the file in a new incognito window? If the upload fails, QuickBooks Self-Employed expects a very specific layout and appropriate format. Let's ensure your spreadsheet matches our local system requirements.

Please check if you're using one of these setups:

  • 3 columns: Date, Description, and Amount.
  • 4 columns: Date, Description, Credit, and Debit. (Make sure to use just Credit and Debit as your headers because adding the word “Amount”, “Spent”, or “Received” columns to them can actually cause the upload to fail.)

If everything matches perfectly above, please do the following to format your CSV file correctly before importing:

  • Clear Out Zeros: Remove any zeros (0) from the file. Leave those cells blank.
  • Fix the Descriptions: Check the Description column. If you see any random numbers where text should be, please correct or remove them.
  • Clean Up Column Headers: Look at your Credit and Debit column headers. If they say "Credit Amount" or "Debit Amount," remove the word "Amount." They should read Credit and Debit.
  • Mac: Mac users must save the file as a Windows CSV file.
  • Dates: Make sure all dates follow the same format. We highly recommend using dd/mm/yyyy (e.g., 20/11/2018).
  • Remove Days of the Week: If your bank includes the day of the week in the date column (like "20/11/2018 TUE"), you'll need to split them. Separate the date and the day of the week into two different columns, then delete the day column.
