Question

Setting up a Michigan resident who works in Wisconsin

We are set up for withholding for Wisconsin only.  We have an employee living in Michigan, who signed a reciprocity agreement, which allows us to not deduct Wisconsin income taxes for that employee, as they will file in Michigan.  Quickbooks is not allowing me to print their W-2 form because there is no State ID # entered in the system.  Can I just enter None ?

Hello @BC-CPA-GB1,

Ideally, the system won't let you print a W2 form for an employee without the state identification number because the IRS will reject your form.

In the same manner, I'd recommend contacting the SSA so you can confirm your employee's ID and for the instruction, you need to take before printing their W2 form.

On top of that, I've got you this helpful article for guidance in preparation for the 2020 tax season: Year-end Checklists for QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.
