Question

How do I enter expense receipts that have more than one sales tax. Ie. GST on the amount was x amount, but also HST at x amount. It only lets me do one or the other?

I purchased shipping credits of $1500. As I used them I get assessed GST or HST depending on where the package went. So the receipt for the month shows an amount for GST at 5%, but also amounts for HST at 13%, 14% and 15%. Quickbooks is only letting me add one tax amount, but I need to enter 4 different ones on the same expense. How do I do that?

You can split the expense into multiple lines if it’s set up as a category, one line per tax rate, all within a single transaction. To do this, open or create your expense, then add a separate line for each tax jurisdiction:

  1. In the Category field, select your expense account (use the same account in the following line items).
  2. In the Description field, write something like “Shipping charges in the 5% GST region” (use similar details for line items 2, 3, and 4 with the correct tax codes).
  3. Enter the net (pre-tax) amount for shipments taxed at 5%, 13%, 14%, and 15%.
  4. From the Sales Tax dropdown, select the GST 5%, HST 13%, 14%, and 15% tax codes.
  5. Click Save and close.

Once you’ve entered all rows, check the grand total in the bottom-right corner to match your monthly shipping statement.

On the other hand, if an item is taxed under two different rates, you can create combined rates. Here's how:

  1. Navigate to the All apps menu, then Sales Tax.
  2. Click on Manage sales tax and choose Add tax.
  3. Hit Add to combine taxes into a group rate.
  4. Enter the Group name, Tax rates, and Applicable on (Net amount, Tax amount, or Net + Tax amount).
  5. Then click Add.
