You'll want to move your company file to your MacBook, paulo-moreno.
Here's how:
- Click File, then Utilities, and then Copy Company File for QuickBooks Mac Desktop.
- Save the file in the removable device. Then, send it to your MacBook.
- Open QuickBooks Mac Desktop.
- Click File, and then Restore.
- Locate the copy, and then click Open. Click OK when prompted.
- Enter the name of the company file, then click Save.
If you already have a copy of your data in your MacBook, please follow these steps:
- Click File, then click Close Company.
- Choose your company file from the No Company Open window.
- Click Open.

Thanks for joining us here, Queenie76.
Have you tried following the steps provided by me colleague in the first reply? You can also follow these steps below to unlock the company file:
- Open your Documents directory and make sure that your company file is saved in there.
- Select the company fill, click File, and then click Get Info.
- Make sure the Locked checkbox is unchecked.
- At the bottom of the Get info window, make sure your user name has permission to read and write the file.
Once done, try to open the company file once again. I would also recommend reaching out to our Technical Support Team in case you're still getting the same error message. Here's how to reach out to them:
- Go to this link: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
- Select QuickBooks Mac Desktop.
- Click Company File.
- Scroll-down a little bit and click Start a Message.
I'd also like to inform you that due to the ongoing pandemic, we have a limited staffing to technical support. They're only open in from Monday to Friday, in between 6 AM to 6 PM Pacific Time.
Please keep me posted if you need more help with this. The Community is always here to guide you.

So, actually I believe the issue was resolved with practicing a little patience. The root file for QB's is in our company's dropbox folder and after setting up my new iMac, that folder was syncing like 32,000 files so I think QB's just wasn't fully synced yet. I waited overnight and magically I was able to open the file with no further issues! Thank you for your support!

Actually it was resolved with a little patience on my end. Our company file is saved on our company's shared dropbox folder. That folder was syncing several thousand files including the QB company file last night. So, I waited overnight and it was able to open it just fine today. Patience is a virtue! Thanks for your support!

I erased my whole hard drive and restored it with a time machine backup. Now when I try to open my quickbooks file I get a message that it's in use by my original user account. Problem is, that account no longer exists! I had 2 copies of the file while doing the transition and I did open one of them. But when I tried opening it again I got the same message. Can anyone help?
