CHASE BANK FEEDS / .QBO FILE DOWNLOAD - PARTIAL MEMO

Hi,

I seem to recall seeing a post on this here, but I just looked for it and can’t find here. Here is my frustration.

When you import transactions from chase bank to QuickBooks desktop the description starts in the "name" field and finishes in the "memo" field. So, you end up with a partial memo on the QB transactions. For example:

Chase bank looks like this online and when you download a CSV file

CREDIT

1/31/2022

Online Transfer from CHK ...0012 transaction#: 01010101010

2500

ACCT_XFER

When you download it into a .QBO file it looks like this:

<STMTTRN>
<TRNTYPE>CREDIT
<DTPOSTED>20220131120000[0:GMT]
<TRNAMT>2500.00
<FITID>[removed]
<NAME>Online Transfer from CHK ...0012
<MEMO>transaction#: 01010101010

What ends up happening is when you add it to QuickBooks, the info you get on the memo is "transaction#: 13557200874" which is useless.

It seems like there is a limit on the characters allowed in the "Name" column. A lot of times it splits it in the middle of a word.

Here is another example

This:

Jan 24, 2022

PARTY CITY 519 BROOKLYN NY 01/22 (...2931)

Card

-$1.09

Turns into this:

<NAME>PARTY CITY 519 BROOKLYN NY
<MEMO>01/22

So, you will see both of those when you are in bank feeds, but once the transaction is imported into QuickBooks, you will only be left with "01/22"

I would like to see it like this

<NAME>PARTY CITY 519 BROOKLYN NY 01/22
<MEMO>PARTY CITY 519 BROOKLYN NY 01/22

If its done the way I just wrote above, in the check memo in QuickBooks you will have the full “PARTY CITY 519 BROOKLYN NY 01/22”

Two’s years ago when I tried to fix this, chase said its QB, QB said its chase. I imagine its something chase can fix easily. I got through 4 extra steps and use third party software to get it to upload how I want it.

I also didn’t write this two years ago because I thought QuickBooks bank feeds was beyond hope of ever being half descent. Now with the new bank feeds, and the 2022 releases, I feel there is some hope that the bank feeds will be something user friendly and time saving in the near future.

Unfortunately the <NAME> and <MEMO> fields in an OFX/QFX file are limited to 32 characters.

I guess 40 or 50 characters would blow up the internet, or something like that (eye roll).

So, there isn't any way for Chase put the entire transaction description you see in your account in one of those fields.

What do you mean limited to 32 characters? Who puts the limit on. I am almost sure I have seen other banks with longer.

what do you mean would blow up the internet?

regardless they should have the same on both lines. Starting on one and finishing on the other is neither here nor there.

Hello there, PRES.

Let me join this thread and share additional information about this.

QuickBooks Desktop has character limitations to most of its fields. Please check each field's character limits in this article: Character limitations for fields in QuickBooks.
