Question

How do I edit a project's client after project is completed? Client created a subcompany for this project now and I want to track that as a new QBO client for the future.

Glad to hear from you today, adrian-missy.

Let me help you with tracking your new QBO client's project. Once the project is completed, you can create a new project and add the new QBO client as a sub-customer to track the project properly.

To add a sub-customer, here's how:

  1. Select Sales on the left menu and go to the Customers tab.
  2. Click the New customer button.
  3. Enter the new QBO Client's information.
  4. Mark the Is sub-customer box and enter the parent customer (old client).
  5. Click Save.

Once done, you can create a new project for the new client. See the steps below:

  1. On the new client's profile, go to the Projects tab.
  2. Enter the Project's name.
  3. Hit Save.

You can get more details about the Project feature in the following resources below:

Let me know the result once you've tried out the steps. I'll be right here if you need anything else. Have a good one!

Thanks for the rapid answer.

However that still does not solve my problem of transferring the data (transactions, expenses, hours) from the completed project over to the new client or simply changing the client of a project.
Since the completed project is still assigned to the old client and I can't see a button to change that connection either?

Hi adrian-missy,

Currently, transferring of data from a completed project to a new client isn't possible. Let me provide you a few information and help you edit a completed project.

Transactions in the completed project are already linked to your client's name. That's why transferring the information causes errors along the way. You'll want to edit the transaction one at a time to the new customer project. You can also create a new project and re-enter the information from there.

Please check this article for more information about how projects are set up: How Projects Work in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

I have these help articles in case you have any other concerns in QBO.

Let me know if you need further help. I'll always be right here to assist.
