Question

I have edited the Standard invoice form and also created a custom invoice form. But when I create a new invoice, QBO reverts to an old style. How do I change the default?

I do not need the service date field and have deleted that in the custom invoice form. But QBO keeps reverting to some form that has that field. How can I change the default?

I can share the steps to help you set your invoice template as the default. Here's how:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙ and then select Custom Form Styles
  2. Find your template and select the ▼ in the Action column.
  3. Select Make default.

Thanks for the reply. I had discovered that solution after posting. Of course, that option to change the default is only available when there is at least one more form available in addition to the Standard form. It turns out that the problem was not with what the customer actually receives. That apparently was correct. The problem was with what I am seeing when I input the data into the invoice. Even though I had deleted the "Service Date" field from the Standard form, the input form for Invoices that QBO offers me still keeps that field.

I can share some more insights about the invoice templates in QuickBooks Online. The Service Date column is a default field when you create invoices. This is regardless if you remove it from the custom template or not.

 

The template will only apply when you view or print the form. You may opt to skip that column as it isn't visible to your customers once you send the sales transaction to them.

 

Don't worry, when there are new updates about removing fields on the default invoice view, it will be communicated through in-product ads. You can also check out these links to be updated with the recent and upcoming changes for our QuickBooks products:

 

 

However, if the template won't apply when previewing or printing forms, try logging in to your account in a private window.

 

Unexpected issues in QBO are mostly affected by the large data in the cache. This is because the regular browser will constantly accumulate history and will not remove it automatically.

 

The incognito mode will not save any history, so it's a great place to identify issues in the browser. Use these keyboard shortcuts to launch a new private window:

 

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N  
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

 

If it works, clear the cache to resolve the issue in regular browsing.
