Question

P&L lines not expanding to show detail

I cannot get any of my P&L reports to expand to show the detail behind the total.  I've always been able to do this.  I've checked my preferences to be sure "Collapse Transactions" is checked but it still does not work.  Well, it worked once and then stopped again.  Is there some bug I'm missing? 

I'm running QB Desktop Pro 2019 and all updates are installed.

I appreciate the complete details you've shared, @Uboat.

 

Let's isolate this unexpected behavior when viewing your Proft and Loss report by running the Verify and Rebuild Data tools. This way, it'll resolve minor data issues within your company file.

 

Here's how to Verify:

  1. Go to Window then choose Close All.
  2. Select File then choose Utilities.
  3. Click Verify Data.
  4. If QuickBooks detected no problems with your data," no further action is needed.
  5. A specific error message, there may already be an article for it. Try searching for it in our QuickBooks Desktop support site for specific instructions.

If there is data damage in the file, run the Rebuild Data Utilities to correct the problem. 

  1. Go to File.
  2. Hover over Utilities, then select Rebuild Data.
  3. You'll receive a message to back up your company file, hit OK. This will ensure that you have a secured copy of your company file.
  4. Choose a place to save your backup.
  5. Once the backup is finished, the Rebuild Data utility will start.
  6. When you receive the message, "Rebuild has completed," then press OK.

I have the exact issue that @Uboat has, I went through the Utilities, verify data and it came back fine. 

I have Premier 2021, installed it Friday, the magnifying glass was there on the P&L and today, Monday it's gone.  It went away on my Premier 2016 about 4months ago, which is why I thought I needed to upgrade to a later edition. So frustrated. I spent an hour and a half on the phone with support to be told near the end of the call that they could help me if I paid $199.95 for a "Plus" account.  I just spent $650.00 on this program and I want it to work

If you're working with a summary P&L report (the standard P&L), then to see the detail behind a number, double click on it and a detail report will appear for just that amount. You can do this for account totals as well as subtotals and for entire sections of data like "Income".

Have you tried the suggestions shared by my colleague, @IamjuViel, and from one of our champions, @BigRedConsulting, above? Let me share other troubleshooting steps to help successfully help generate a transaction detail of your Profit and Loss report.

 

If you're still unable to open the Transaction Detail view of your Profit & Loss report within the totals after following the suggestions above, let's consider utilizing QuickBooks Tool Hub to continue our troubleshooting steps.

 

You can do so by following the steps outlined below:

  1. Download the QuickBooks Tool hub.
  2. Open and install the downloaded file.
  3. On the QuickBooks Tool app, select Program Problems.
  4. Click Quick Fix my Program.
