Hello userlynartinvestment

Thanks for joining the Community.

When connecting to Making Tax Digital (MTD) in QuickBooks, we'll automatically sync and display the start and end dates for your next open period with HMRC.

Have you successfully connected to MTD in QB, and was your previous years return submitted via a different software?

Yes successfully connected to MTD. The previous years return ended 30th June and I was trying to prepare and submit the return. I can manually print the reports and access the numbers but in the Taxes section there are no previous periods/returns.

From what you are saying am I correct in assuming that the VAT return dates originate from HMRC side?

Thanks userlynartinvestment - that's right, the VAT obligations are sent directly from HMRC to QuickBooks. We'd recommend contacting HMRC to update the request on their side if you're needing to submit an earlier period. You can also reach our Live Support team so that we can confirm your VAT registration no. to check for any issues with the MTD connection. 🙂
