5 min read

This article discusses the following work from home tips for businesses:

Due to the massive spread of novel COVID – 19 pandemic globally, the businesses and workforce have to undergo a lot of changes. These changes have resulted in businesses and employees making a lot of adjustments professionally as well as personally. Of the many changes that individuals are currently experiencing, the most compelling change is transiting from working from office to working from home.

The remote working at such a large scale is bound to leave an everlasting impact on the way people would live and work for many years to come.

As per recent research by Gartner, the demand for remote work will increase by 30% due to generation Z fully entering the workforce. Therefore, businesses embracing remote working need to implement it effectively in order to boot productivity and morale of the employees.

This article brings to the forefront the insights as well as tips to help businesses navigate remote working during COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Have Open Communication

Since employees are afar from the comfort of approaching supervisors when working remotely, it becomes extremely important for them to maintain strong and constant connection with their supervisors.

Timely Reporting

Thus, senior leaders responsible for overlooking the daily work of their team mates should ensure that such team members are reporting time to time regarding the completion of tasks, timelines, challenges faced by them during work as well as their achievements.

By doing so, the teammates would feel supported and would always be on track with regards to their work.

Avoid Email Overload

Another change witnessed with regards to communication at work place is the replacement of casual conversations with innumerable emails and text messages.

The overload of such emails and updates via messages acts as a disturbance for the employees and makes them less productive at work.

The supervisors need to work out time during which emails need to be sent out as well as their number. This will minimize distractions for both the teammates as well as the senior leaders whom they report to.

Clarify Tasks and Deadlines and Encourage Questions

Furthermore, the supervisors or managers need to clarify the tasks, deadlines priorities and expectations to their teammates given the circumstances.

In addition to this, the supervisors need to encourage their teammates to ask questions during their conversations to avoid overlooking any important issues.

This is because the supervisors might be engaged in managing other issues pertaining to COVID-19, thus leading to higher odds of missing an issue that needs attention.

  • Encourage Employees to Create Workspace

Ensure that your employees carve out a dedicated workspace similar to office which is separate from their living space. When working remotely, it is important for employees to distinguish their work space from their living space.

This is because when employees leave their home for work, they move from their living space to enter into a new productive space where they can achieve their daily tasks and have meetings with colleagues and clients without any interruption.

Likewise, while working remotely they need to create a productive space which is separate from their living space so that they can uninterruptedly.

Furthermore, by carving out a dedicated workspace, the employees can shift from their workspace to living area in order to unwind once they are done for the day. So, to design a dedicated workspace there is no need for employees to rebuild their office completely.

Rather, they can find a space at their home that is ideal for working and modify into new workspace which is similar to their office space. Therefore, by recreating the working environment employees would be able to work seamlessly and efficiently.

Also, it is extremely important that employees keep their workspace clean so as to maintain higher productivity. This is because a messed up workspace has a great impact on the mental and emotional health of employees.

  • Separate Work Hours from Personal Time

The supervisors need to ensure that their employees separate their work time from personal time. By doing so, it would help them to put some gap between when they are at work and when they are at home.

This is quite challenging to achieve given the daily chores at home that shift their attention at the middle of the day. However, if employees follow a schedule that is reasonable and is customized according to their daily work demand, then working hours can be differentiated from personal time.

In addition to this, it is also very important for employees to set some timeline for working hours as this would help them avoid working round the clock.

It is quite easy for remote workers to undertake work as well as check emails at their own comfort, that is, at odd hours.

However, employees picking up work at strange and fragmented hours can be quite troublesome. This is because doing work for which they are not compensated will lead to burning them out and result in resentment. It may also have a great impact on their family life.

  • Encourage Employees to Timeout

Science says that taking breaks while working is not a waste of time. Rather, it is a necessity for your career and wellbeing. Unfortunately, if you keep working the whole day long, studies show that you lose focus and concentration and hence your performance gets hampered.

As per the study, humans cannot concentrate for eight hours in a row. Most of the employees are productive only for 2 hours and 53 minutes in an eight hour day. Since it is quite easy to get entrapped working round the clock in case of remote working, psychological detachment from work becomes impossible.

That is taking your mind off from work and letting your brain and body relax becomes quite challenging. Thus, frequent breaks help you to disengage from work thoughts and recover from fatigue.

So, you can schedule breaks according to your working style and initially start off with taking breaks every 30 – 90 minutes. Once you learn what suits you the best, you can schedule your breaks on your calendar or planner.
