DataDab is a full-service Internet marketing company offering innovative web marketing solutions to mid to large size companies across the globe. Founded by Amit Ashwini, the company prides itself on driving traffic, converting visitors, and measuring effectiveness to ultimately deliver real results for their clients. The venture also has a product, DataDab+, aimed at helping small businesses leverage the power of social media. We chat with Amit about the business. An excerpt from the interview:
- What made you start your venture?
I’ll say it was more of an accident than a design. But having said that, running my own company was always a dream. Eight years ago, I was working for a well known Indian tech giant that all of a sudden collapsed and I was jobless. I didn’t want to join another software company and started taking up copywriting assignments as a freelancer. In my free time, I would learn web analytics and its implementation in digital marketing strategies, this later helped me grab online marketing assignments too. That was the time I realized that digital marketing is so dynamic and conventional ways of marketing weren’t good enough anymore. I wanted to provide smarter solutions to my clients so they could get the most out of their marketing bucks. The idea was to increase the conversion rate for my clients instead of increasing their marketing spend. I found a lot of takers for my services and that’s how DataDab was created.
- What has been the key to your business’s success?
Our solution satisfies an immediate need. A lot of businesses were spending a ton of money on marketing through various channels: PPC, email, SEO, Social, Affiliates but more often than not they didn’t get the ROI they expected. We promised to get them maximum ROI from their marketing spend and we go all out to make sure they do. And every single time we have exceeded our clients’ expectations. We always strive to go that extra mile. If the client is happy, we are happier. Apart from result oriented approach, it’s our pricing that makes our service all the more desirable.
- What are the major challenges in your line of business and how did/do you overcome them?
The biggest challenge that we face quite frequently is to convince customers to outsource their marketing campaign to us. The first question asked is why should I use your marketing service or your scheduling platform (DataDab+) when I could do this all by myself? Our answer to that is, outsourcing your marketing campaign to us will ensure you have a professionally managed campaign at a great price point that should deliver you a solid return on investment. We use data extensively from various sources, gather insights about their target customers and then accordingly create a dedicated marketing plan.
- Do you have a mentor who guides/advices you on matters of the business?
I don’t have a mentor as such but there have been a number of people who have consistently helped and cooperated in as many ways as they can. First and foremost my wife, who is also my business partner and she always has some really helpful growth hacking ideas and strategies. And there are a couple of very close friends of mine since college days who have been helping and guiding me in taking DataDab to that next level that we have been striving to.
- Have you benefitted from the use of any specific technology for your regular operations?
Yes, we have. We are quite dependent on tools like Google Analytics, Open Web Analytics, Clicky etc. for our day to day operations. At the same time, we have a very capable team that takes care of most of the tech tasks at hand. We also very extensively use open source applications.
- What strategy do you follow for Customer Satisfaction & Expansion?
Customer experience is the key to survive and thrive while doing any kind of business. We treat customers like they are the boss and we go out of our ways to help them. So keeping our promises and integrity is a given. Measuring customer satisfaction is extremely important and we use Surveymonkey to get feedback from customers and Basecamp to manage the projects and interact with them. And we take the feedbacks from customers very seriously and ensure that we act upon them. Even if it means donning the role of customer support representative at times, I do it happily. Every single person in DataDab must lead from the front with customer service.
- What, according to you, are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
- Learn how to sell.
- Learn how to manage and train staff.
- Ability to identify strengths and weaknesses
