Founded by Lovleen Bhatia and Kapil Tyagi,  the genesis of Edureka came with the promise of delivering to millions of professional learners, a cutting edge online platform that provided knowledge and guidance aimed at supercharging careers and giving learners an edge over their peers. We chat with the founders about the venture. An excerpt from the interview:  

  • What made you start your venture?

In 2011, we discovered an alarming trend. There was an astounding disconnect between academia and the industry. The 90s had brought to India an angel named Information Technology and with it came promises of globalization, new opportunities, and a window to the wide progressive world. New skills were suddenly in demand and gatekeepers of professional education took immediate notice, creating new curricula to keep pace with the changing priorities.

Job markets were exploding with never-heard-before profiles and a new wave of careers was presented on a platter. The good times continued for more than a decade, till one day it hit us that beneath all the glamour lay a dormant truth.

There was a yawning disconnect between what was taught in colleges and what the industry demanded. Someone had to tackle the problem head-on. On a hot summer afternoon in 2011, Edureka was born.

  • What has been the key to your business’s success?

Industry relevancy and customer-centricity. It’s never easy at ground zero. Real-life technology scenarios are vastly different from what is taught in colleges. CIOs have a clear mandate to leverage technology for healthier bottom lines, while HR managers have the challenge of finding the best talent that understands how to use technology most effectively.

The best candidate is one who is cognizant of industry needs and demands. Edureka is committed to acting as the segue between the industry and learners.

By bringing learners closer to the industry, Edureka is creating an ever-growing community of industry-ready and future-proof professionals. For Edureka, customers are paramount. Edureka believes that every learner is a potential bright star, and takes it upon itself to mentor its learner community to take on real-world challenges.

Edureka is the only e-learning brand that provides maniacal support during and even after a learner completes a course.   • What are the major challenges in your line of business and how did/do you overcome them?

Though Edureka has been in operation since mid-2011, the concept of e-learning as an equally effective alternative to offline learning is still catching up. E-learning is not yet a commodity, especially in India. That said, it is extremely encouraging to see a trend towards online learning, primarily due to the time and space flexibility it offers to learners.

  • Do you have a mentor who guides/advices you on matters of the business?

Right from the inception of Edureka, Kalyan Kumar Banerjee has been a mentor and a well-wisher to Team Edureka. He is among the ten co-founders of Mindtree.

After participating in the growth and transformation of the computer industry for 26 years, Kalyan joined Centurion University in June 2012 to explore and implement different ways to make an impact to education and society. His guidance and experience are invaluable to Edureka, it’s current and future growth journey.

  • Have you benefitted from the use of any specific technology for your regular operations?

Edureka houses a highly qualified team of social media experts who communicate regularly with learners. A huge chunk of Edureka learners is constantly interacting with various personal and professional social media channels.

Edureka leverages these channels to provide valuable content to its learners around their professional interests, and introduces them to industry trends, and provides technology insights. Additionally, Edureka also leverages its own state-of-the-art learning management system to communicate and collaborate with learners.

  • What strategy do you follow for Customer Satisfaction & Expansion?

Edureka is a brand that takes customer-centricity very seriously. We constantly engage with our ever-growing ecosystem of learners to ensure continuous knowledge transfer.

We provide to our customers, customized content around the skills they desire, and recommend career paths based on previously developed skills and industry trends.   • What, according to you, are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
  1. Persistence à Every entrepreneurial venture has its ups and downs. It is critical to stay calm when the chips are down and being balanced when business is booming.
  2. A long term vision à It is essential to commit yourself to a reasonably long time before you start seeing positive results. Having a long term vision and monitoring it closely is critical to entrepreneurial success.
  3. Leadership à The vision to become a thought leader in the relevant ecosystem is essential for any entrepreneur. The drive to be the number one will lead to better business direction and strategies.
