Featuring Merako Media

3 min read

Merako Media started as a passion project by Nikhil Furtado. He was later joined by Vinay Shankar, Pratibha Nayak and Sudeer Kumar to build a business that would be the perfect solution for any client’s media, communications and marketing requirements. Working with graphic design, web design, online marketing, merchandise, the company looks to raise the level of any business they collaborate with and do it all from their base in Mysore. We chat with Nikhil about the venture.

An excerpt from the interview:

What made you start your venture?

Merako Media Pvt. Ltd. Was initially a firm called Hidden Reflections started by me in Mysore in 2010 while I was in my first year of engineering. Hidden Reflections started out of a hobby which then turned into a business. I started off with designing posters for local events and college fests and then slowly moved on to local outlets and friends’ businesses. Hidden Reflections was then converted into a Pvt. Ltd. Company called Merako Media in March 2016 with the entry of three more directors Vinay Shankar, Pratibha Nayak and Sudeer Kumar.

• What has been the key to your business’s success?

Our quality design and service along with timely delivery and focus on customer satisfaction are the main reason we are where we are today. We are one of the only Integrated Media and Communications company in Mysore and we provide a one stop solution to any client looking to grow his business or increase his visibility.

• What are the major challenges in your line of business and how did/do you overcome them?

One of the major challenges in a small city like Mysore is changing people’s mindsets and getting them to realize the value of design and good branding. I wouldn’t say that we have fully overcome it yet but we have managed to make people realize that there is more to business and advertising than just putting an ad in the newspaper. Some people who already had realized that used to get their work done in Bangalore but once they realized that they had a company like that in Mysore only they were more than happy to work with us.

• Do you have a mentor who guides/advices you on matters of the business?

While in college I was a part of NEN (National Entrepreneurship Network) and have interacted with many mentors there. Apart from them, there are a few industry experts who have settled down in Mysore and are always willing to help when required.

• Have you benefitted from the use of any specific technology for your regular operations?

Yes, QuickBooks has been a vital tool in our day to day operations especially in billing and CRM as we have many small recurring accounts (clients) which makes it tedious to know who owes us what and when is it due. All this was simplified because of QuickBooks as it is very easy to bill and track invoices of clients and know their dues.

• What strategy do you follow for Customer Satisfaction and Expansion?

Our company name, Merako is derived from the Greek word ‘Meraki’ (may-rah-kee) that means doing something with passion and soul. It means to do something, either making a cup of coffee, creating a brief, designing a poster, any task at all, with all your heart, with love, with your very soul. It’s when you put something of yourself into what you’re doing. It means doing things with a passion. And that’s exactly the philosophy we aim to follow at Merako Media Pvt. Ltd.

• What, according to you, are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

According to me, passion, dedication and perseverance are the three main skills any entrepreneur must possess in order to be successful. Passion to turn his/her ideas into a reality, dedication to make sure those ideas see the light of day and perseverance to keep going even if the going is tough.
