Different situations and different groups of friends like different types of music. So when organizing a get-together or simply hanging out – the choice of the playlist you put together could become a difficult proposition.

Enter PindropMusic, an app that decided the playlist by sharing music suggestions based on the people around you. We chat with founders, Vishu Gupta, Prankush Roopanwal and Sumit Chakraborty about the venture. An excerpt from the interview:

  • What made you start your venture, PindropMusic?

This idea came to us about 18 months ago, when we used to listen to music while partying, driving or doing anything at all, we noticed that we just kept skipping the songs until we find the best song for that moment. We just keep looking for the right track and the entire moment just gets spoiled. Our choice of music changes from time to time according to our mood at the moment.

For example, “My House” from Florida may feel good while you are partying but not while traveling and it may be reverse for “Let’s Get Retarded” by Black Eyed Peas. Hence people like both the songs but not at the same time.

Every user has his emotions related to music and it can really define his happiness at any particular moment. Hence, it’s really important that we suggest the right music at the right moment to the user. People at different locations have different cultures and tastes will have different music preferences.

Keeping this thought in mind, we created PindropMusic that provides only the best music suggestions for any moment that is recommended by nearby people.

  • What has been the key to PindropMusic’s success?

The concept of listening to what other people are listening to nearby feels very interesting and people like this concept a lot. This creates a kind of social network for music and somehow it really creates a great music playlist for users.

  • What are the major challenges in your line of business and how did/do you overcome them?

This industry is very crowded and it becomes difficult to make users adapt to a new system when some big players are already there. Making people believe in this new concept by wooing them is required.

In our case, we have been successful in attracting a lot of users through influencer marketing. Products that are recommended by influencers are much looked out for. We have been creating good relationships with the industry influencers who have tested the product and recommend it to their followers.

  • Do you have a mentor who guides/advice you on matters of the business?

Our investors have been our mentors since the inception of the venture. Their vast network also helps us in getting some incite of the industry and how to look into the issues with a problem-solving attitude.

  • Have you benefitted from the use of any specific technology for your regular operations?

We have been using some marketing automation tools that have been very helpful, Tweetfavy, Buffer, and Copromote have been my favorite for growth hacking. We are a small team so we did not use any communication management tools other than Slack.

  • What strategy do you follow for Customer Satisfaction & Expansion?

We have always been analyzing data and deducing customer feedback. Retaining customers and users is very important for product validation. Changes that you need to keep this thing straight can be determined by the way users are using the app and comparing it with the way you want them to use the app.

With this comparison, you can find out what changes need to be done in the platform in order to retain users who will eventually become customers. By the time you have the product-market fit by following a lean model for development, you’ll also get the knowledge of what marketing strategies work for your business. As I said above, influencer strategy works for our business and we’ll focus more on this in the coming days.

  • What, according to you, are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

The entrepreneur’s journey involves so many ups and downs. One needs to be patient because when many things go right a lot of them fall apart as well. His patience will define his persistence in this field. Focus is also required because an entrepreneur’s action list involves so many big or small things to do that he really forgets to take care of himself.

Focus on priorities keeps mind steady and work-life balance. Passion is what drives you through the most difficult times. You need to believe in yourself and motivate your team about what you’re building is the right thing. It may not be perfect but you’ll figure out what you need to do to make things perfect.
