What made you start your venture?
Our Grandfather Mr.Alimchand Vazirani and Grandmother Prem Vazirani were Globetrotters. Our Grandfather started a garment store 60 years ago seeing the lack of travel attire in the Indian retail market, especially for the Winter traveler. Prrem’s was launched 16 year ago by our mother and grandmother with the vision that this market is only going to grow. With this legacy and instinct towards winter travel trends in India, we decided to take Prrems – The Winter Wear Store digital in the year 2010 by launching Prrems.com.
It is now an ecommerce store that retails to the Indian and International market. Apart from retailing winter wear, we share fashion and travel tips with our clients. What has been the key to your business’s success?
Clients love the fact that we are a niche concept with everything that they need when they are travelling to a Winter destination. Neeraj Kabi, lead actor of Ship of Theseus told us that he thought Prrems would be a three storey store. And even though it turned out to be this small quaint store, he got everything he needed. This itself, talks about the kind of variety we have at Prrem’s for men and women of all age groups. Be it thermals, sweaters, snow jackets, hoodies, winter accessories, the entire winter collection is available at Prrem’s.
What are the major challenges in your line of business and how did/do you overcome them?
“Winter Wear in Bombay? You got to be kidding! Do you get clients?” These are the statements we get to hear often. We are in the city of Bombay, where people travel alot and need clothing for winter. With increasing awareness about fitness and running, runners are travelling to chilly destinations like Boston and New York.
Where do you pick up an All Weather Jacket in the heat of May or Quick Dry thermals in September? The challenge is to make people in our industry and parallel industries understand that there is a market for our product. This is changing now, the more we are sensitizing people about winter layering, the awareness is increasing.
Do you have a mentor who guides/advices you on matters of the business?
It is always nice to get perspective from veterans in the Industry. We have been fortunate to interact with Mr. Ashok Lalla for our ecommerce website. Marissa Bronfman, founder of Moxie Media and Vikas Verma, founder of The Colour Factory have also been very kind with their valuable inputs for the business.
Have you benefitted from the use of any specific technology for your regular operations?
Yes, absolutely. We use an inventory management system which has helped automate operations like billing and stock control. The software also gives us analytical reports on various aspects of the business.
What strategy do you follow for Customer Satisfaction & Expansion?
We take regular feedback from our clients, meet them once they are back, talk about their experiences and take feedback to improve our collection. Clients themselves give us ideas on increasing awareness, put hoardings, advertise in Newspapers all of which if one of them sponsors, we will love to do!
What, according to you, are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
a) You need to market yourself shamelessly and network with the world b) Look beyond the monthly pay check. c) Give As much as you can possibly help, support someone who is not necessarily part of your industry.
