Saurabh Gupta, Pronoot Barkakati and Brijesh Bharadwaj were hostel-mates at BITS,Pilani during their years as student of engineering. Pronoot being an independent artist also had many a times lamented how hard it is for freelance and up-coming artists to monetize their work in India. Brijesh made a mental note of this and pondered over it numerous times until one day he finally thought of a platform that would allow artists to reach out to fans. Thus was born TunePatrol. Currently, TunePatrol is a market place for indie music, artists who use this platform to sell their music online. They pay a percentage of their sales to the TunePatrol team.

Once they had the business plan ready, Karthik G joined the team as the tech lead and TunePatrol was set to take-off. They went through BITS Pilani’s accelerator program called New Venture Creation, topped it and thereby got awarded the Manoj Saxena Grant for promising start-ups from BITS Pilani. They also won MDI Gurgaon’s start-up challenge and got noticed by Hatch and were picked up by them as their portfolio company. Should we mention here that TunePatrol is Hatch’s youngest portfolio company till date? This is what Brijesh had to tell us about the venture they have put together for the love of music and for the benefit of budding talents across the country

Team – TunePatrol

What made you start your venture? We found a big problem that we understood well and for which we felt we had a cool solution; so we started up!!   What has been the key to your business’s success? We love working with each other and we bring complementary skills needed for this start-up to the table. This has been the biggest key to our little success.   What are the major challenges in your line of business and how did/do you overcome them? We are all 20 – 22 years old!! Getting people to take us seriously in India was going to be our biggest challenge, but we solved this by getting selected as a portfolio company of the The Hatch. This gave us a lot of credibility and here we are.   Do you have a mentor who guides/ advices you on matters of the business? Yes we do – we are being mentored by alumni from BITS Pilani through a program called BITS Sparks and we are also mentored by the people at The Hatch. BITS Spark is the alumni initiative of BITS Pilani to support budding start-ups. Through BITS Spark we were assigned a dedicated mentor, Abhinav Khushraj, who is also the founder of the New Venture Creation program. Together with the guidance from him and the mentors at Hatch we were able to raise a small seed round of $20,000 from Angel Investors Consortium which we have used to get things going. The Hatch has been terrific in terms of the support and guidance they have given us. Prajakt Raut who is the co-founder of Hatch has been our mentor since our first years in college (we knew him through Conquest, the startup challenge of BITS Pilani of which me and Saurabh were the organizers) so it was just a continuation of that relationship for us. One of the most important things Hatch has done is to add credibility to a young team like ours.   Have you benefitted from the use of any specific technology regular ope for your rations? We recently started using asana.com, we think it’s a great tool to manage tasks.   What strategy do you follow for Customer Satisfaction & Expansion? I personally take care of customer satisfaction and feedback, we are very active on our social media handles and have near instant response times on email too (smartphones!) so this helps. As far as expansion is concerned, our website uses the concepts of network effects and also has social media plugins built into it, both of which will play a major role in customer expansion, we also do a lot of SEO and SEM.   What, according to you, are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur? Creativity, Common Sense and Resilience!!! Intuit Small Business India team wishes them luck!!!
