Zoomcar is a Self-Drive car rental service which allows customers to rent cars by the hour, day, week, or month. Established by David Back and Greg Moran, Zoomcar distinguished itself in the market as the first-of- its-kind service delivering convenience, mobility, and independence without the downside of the cost and hassle of owning a car. We chat with David about the Venture. An Excerpt from the Interview:
- What made you start your venture?
We both studied India in college and viewed this as tremendous opportunity; Greg had some work experience here and wanted to pursue something in sustainability; I was an incredible car sharing enthusiast and the rest was history.
- What has been the key to your business’s success?
Building a great team is mission critical for any organizations success. Particularly with Zoomcar though since we have so many moving parts, it was really pivotal to surround ourselves with talented individuals across different domains. Of course, being the first one in the market never hurts!
- What are the major challenges in your line of business and how did/do you overcome them?
Early on, we faced substantial regulatory hurdles with our governmental permitting. Once this was overcome, we faced various other challenges such as tech deployment, recruiting, and supply acquisition. We’ve built up the team considerably in the past few months to help better prepare ourselves for future growth. We work with various partners on the supply front and we’re constantly looking to broaden our base here so we can better serve our customers.
- Do you have a mentor who guides/advices you on matters of the business?
We do have an advisory board here in India and that’s comprised of various individuals within Indian business. This ranges from individuals involved with finance, technology, and investing.
- Have you benefitted from the use of any specific technology for your regular operations?
We work with a very robust GPS tracking platform that helps us monitor and track our vehicles across India. Technology is a focal point for our business and we’re always evaluating interesting applications that can improve the customer experience.
- What strategy do you follow for Customer Satisfaction & Expansion?
We believe in convenience, flexibility, and consistency with respect to the customer experience. If you can provide these three elements day in day out, you will be in good shape. As we expand, we constantly ask ourselves how we can maintain these pieces. That’s one of the challenges of scaling a business successfully here in India.
- What, according to you, are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
