Author and Educationalist, Ken Robinson once said “If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original.” Aditya Narayan Padhi and Debasis Pand, founders of Spacepopup exemplify that statement. After two startup ideas that didn’t pan out, they put their heads together and came up with a new venture that created a marketplace to connect the creative community.
The company focuses on the creation of a shared economy because, as Debasis puts it, “sharing economy are growing rapidly in India and creating new opportunities across the globe. A PWC report estimates that the market will be USD 335 billion globally by 2025 and sharing economy sectors are likely to grow much quicker than the rate of traditional rental sectors.” Through Spacepopup, individuals such as photographers, dance instructors, musicians, yoga and fitness instructors are put in touch with space owners who are willing to rent their space when it is not in use.
Creative practitioners often found it difficult to find a space to hold sessions or events and space owners were left with empty spaces and no place to even list them. Using technology to create a shared economy marketplace, customer satisfaction is their number one priority. Debasis says ”We listen to each customer feedback and accordingly implement these changes to make the platform user-friendly. Every week our team brainstorms about how to improve our platform to make it better and bring in more sales.”
Their past small business experience has influenced their present startup immensely and now, one of their biggest challenges is to hire individuals who have the same passion as they do. Currently bootstrapped, they can’t afford to hire sales staff in each city so have taken to thinking out of the box to find creative solutions for the problems they encounter. Technology has been invaluable as they have been able to utilise the latest marketing automation tools, web tools for development and project management tools to manage their day-to-day operations.
When asked about their advice to budding entrepreneurs, their answer is simple “Focus on your current and future goal, drive your business with determination and passion and sell your idea”
