The Top 5 is here and back at it again! Instead of QuickBooks Online getting all the glory, we’re going to switch it up and focus on Desktop. There are many similarities between both products, but some situations are very unique to Desktop. I’m going to start from the top and focus on your questions about Desktop installation. 

1 . I’m getting an error message when trying to install QuickBooks Desktop. Now what?

QuickBooks Desktop is a complex product with many features customers love. At times an error may pop up but our team has given you the tools to troubleshoot quickly and effortlessly. Here are the tried and true steps to help you out.

The first thing you’ll want to do is download the most recent version of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. This tool helps fix common errors and will be your partner in crime when you need it.

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. After you download QuickBooks Tool Hub, save the file somewhere you can easily find it.
  3. Open the file: (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

Great! That was the hard part:)

  1. Open the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  2. In the tool hub, select Installation Issues.
  3. Select QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool and let it run.
  4. When the tool finishes, restart your computer.

2. How can I reinstall QuickBooks Desktop onto another computer?

Sometimes your trusty old PC breaks down on you, or maybe you decide to upgrade and get yourself that laptop you’ve been eyeing. Whatever the situation may be, let me help you get back to work and download QuickBooks onto your new computer.

  1. Go to:
  2. Select your QuickBooks versions by choosing the country, product, and year version.

  1. Hit Search.
  2. Click the Download button.

Once completed, you can now continue the installation process.

  1. Run your downloaded QuickBooks 2020.
  2. Click Yes on the pop-up message.
  3. Choose Next to begin the installation.
  4. Select the I accept the terms in the license agreement box and click Next.
  5. Enter your License and Product numbers, then select Next.
  6. Follow the on-screen instruction to complete the installation.


3. How can I use QuickBooks Desktop on two computers?

Many times your work is done from multiple places, not just one. For example, maybe you have an office but want to do some work at home on a different computer. With QuickBooks Desktop, it’s simple to create another workspace for yourself so you can access everything you need.

To install and use QBDT on your second computer. Here's how:

  1. Go to your second PC and install QuickBooks.
  2. Once done, go back to the original computer and create a backup copy of your company file.
  3. Copy the backup file to a flash drive or other external device or through. 
  4. Then, restore the backup onto the new PC.

4. How do I get multiple licenses in QuickBooks Desktop?

Do you and your coworker need to work in QuickBooks at the same time? First step is to purchase additional users to your license. Here are those quick steps:

  1. Open up QuickBooks. 
  2. Go to the Help menu.
  3. Choose Manage My License and then choose Buy Additional User License.
  4. Click the Add Seats Online link to purchase.

You can then look into creating a host environment for multi-user mode in QuickBooks Desktop.

5. Do I need to upgrade QuickBooks Desktop? How often?

It’s important to know that QuickBooks Desktop has a 3-year lifecycle. When you’ve been on your version for three years, here is what you need to do to get the latest supported version.

Once again, you want to download and install the new version of QuickBooks Desktop

  1. Open your original version of QuickBooks. Then open the company file you want to upgrade.
  2. Press F2 to open the Product Information window.
  3. Look in the File Information section. Note where you save your company file on your computer.
  4. Run the Rebuild Tool for your company file. This preps it for the upgrade.

Lastly, you want to upgrade your company file:

  1. Make sure all users log out of your company file.
  2. Open your new version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Select Open or Restore Company if you don't have a company file open. (You can also go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.)
  4. Select Open a company file, then Next.
  5. Browse your computer for your company file. Select it and then select Open.
  6. Sign in to your company file as an admin user.
  7. Before you upgrade, QuickBooks automatically creates a backup of your existing company file. You can select Change this default location to save the backup in a specific folder.
  8. Select Update Now to start the upgrade.
  9. When QuickBooks finishes, select Done.

You can now open your company file in your new version of QuickBooks Desktop! It’s also important to keep your account updated as well. These updates will fix known bugs and keep the program working optimally.
